Does anyone know the maiden name of Ann They would have been married before 1814 Children were Harriet ,James ,John and lived in Portsmouth  Hampshire Thanks Shirley

This is a request that I have visited several times, but failed to come up with anything remotely like a possible marriage for this couple.  They do not appear to have married in Hampshire.  It is possible that they married on the Isle of Wight.  Do you know the birthplaces for them both?

Onthe 1841 census ithas Ann at 55yrs old .the 1851 census claims she was from  Pet ersfield and was 73 yrs old ? They were living at mount pleasant, landport ,portsea .I think Edward was born  in Portsmouth.  Edward died 1838 and Ann 1854    Their daughter Harriet was my gggrandmother      Hope this helps Shirley

I cannot find this couple's marriage in Hampshire - there is no licence allegation listed.  I have checked the Petersfied transcriptions - nothing, looked county-wide for a marriage - nothing.

This one has me stumped at the moment, I'm afraid.  Sad

Do you have the baptism/birth registration for Harriet to be sure that her parents were Edward & Ann.?

If you are going by the census information, it's possible that this is a second marriage.

There is a marriage for an Edward CROSS in 1840 March quarter in Southampton, one of the possible brides is Ann MARTILL. Huh Huh

The Isle of Wight is still a possibility.

thanks No I don't have proof of Harriets birth .The only thing I have is her marriage cert. to John Airey which states that her Dads name is or was Edward and he was a gardner I don't have the 1841 census with her name on it. Ann  seemes to be on her own. It states that shes independent What does this mean. On the 1851 census shes a widow. I can't find Edwards death Shirley

Hi Shirley, (Posted before I read your pm!)

I see a marriage on the IGI for Harriet and John Airey in Manchester in 1843.  This is rather a long way from Portsmouth.  Can you confirm that this is the correct Harriet from the 1851 census i.e. it gives her birth place as Portsmouth?  Does the marriage certificate give her age?

I have found the baptisms of four children born to Edward & Ann Cross in Portsea between 1814 and 1826 in a transcript as well as the IGI: Harriet, William, James and John.  The transcript does not gives occupations unfortunately.

You say that you cannot find Edward’s death but also that he died in 1838 – where did that information come from?  I have found an Edward Cross who died in Portsea aged 43 in 1828.  There isn’t another prior to 1837.

The marriage of Edward Cross to Ann in Southampton can probably be discounted – Edward and Ann were both in their early 20s.

Harriet may well be in Portsea in 1841 employed as a servant.  If so, any ideas as to why the marriage in Manchester?

I haven’t been able to find John and Harriet on either 1851 or 1861 census.

I was wrong about Edwards death.I don't have it The marriage cert just says they were full age John and Harriet are on the1851 cesus in      tottersdown,tooting graveney,surrey John 36 born in claughton Lancashire. This time Harriet claims to be born in Portsmouth The first 3 children were born in Tooting So this wrong for Harriet as I know that she was born Dec.7 in Southwark Harriet Airey died sept qu 1852 and John is now married to HannahHarriet born 1843 is actually the biological daughter of a spanish sea captain. I think John Airey was a friend who married her to give the baby his name I inherited the spanish coloring My grandmother was also anougher Harriet
