Can anyone help with finding who William Patterson (1810) father was, here's details I have on him from census:
1841 census Sherburn, Sherburn Hill Village, 'Sherburn Hill' William Patterson, 30, Blacksmith Mary Patterson, 30 Alice Patterson, 2
1841 Census, Heworth, Holly Hill George Patterson, 60, Countryman (?), Y Hannah Patterson, 60, Y Johanna Patterson, 7, Y Hannah Patterson, 6, Y
Sherburn 1851 Census, Sherburn Hill Village William Patterson, Head, married, 41, Blacksmith, born Felling Shore, County Durham Mary Patterson, Wife, married, 41, born Newbottle, County Durham Johanna Patterson, daughter, 17, Milliner, born Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham Alice Storey Patterson, daughter, 12, Scholar, born Sherburn Hill, County Durham
Is the George Patterson in the 1841 census his father or uncle maybe as he is living near to felling shore where William claims to have been born on 1851 census, and also it appears that Williams daughter Johanna is living there too?
I found this also, which could explain the 'Storey' name given to Williams daughter Alice maybe: 5 Apr 1812 William Pattison, of Fellside, born 5-Feb 1812, illegitimate son of Richard Storey (husbandman) by Ann Pattison (single woman)
Anyone help make sense of this?
Cheers Ed.

There seems to be a faint trace left by the enumerator against the entries for the two children at Holly Hill, of George's child, which would make him their grandfather. Not unusual in those days for children to live temporarily with an elderly grandparent, to take the strain off parental resources or to assist frail grandparents in household tasks. Wouldn't have thought a man would have cared to perpetuate an illegitimate origin unless there was inheritance money involved. Was the Fellside mentioned, the one in Whickham parish on the other side of Gateshead?

Hi,
Thanks.
The Felling i can only assume is Felling near Hexham... however i'm not sure. It just seemed a bit of a coincidence with the Storey name.
Can't find a William Patterson son of George Patterson and Hannah on the IGI site.. or on the Durham Records Online site either however
Cheers Ed.

The IGI has a William Patterson, son of George Patterson and Hannah Notman, born 9 Jan 1811, baptised 19 May 1811 in Heworth, Co. Durham. Would need to check the original records to confirm as the IGI can be unreliable. Alan.

Thanks,
Maybe the 'Storey' name comes from Williams wife Mary's side then.
George Died between 1841 and 1851, but Hannah is on the 1851 census in Heworth.
Cheers,
Ed

Is this the George Patterson who married Hannah Notman?
Would explain the 'Alice Sorey' link

Felling would be the one in Gateshead which was in Durham googlemap
Not sure if that would have come under Gateshead fell parish. The parish registers for Gateshead fell are under the Bishop of Durham transcripts on the search.labs.familysearch website.
Regards Rewcastle
Edit: You'll have to wait a while to check the registers at http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/
There's a message saying:- To prepare for a new release, Record Search has been temporarily shut down.

Heworth St. Mary Baptism: William Patterson born Felling Shore 9 Jan 1811, baptised 19 May 1811 3rd child of George Patterson of Chester le Street, husbandman and Hannah, daughter of John Notman, of Heworth.
I can barely make out the place of birth for William from my microfiche but when the BT's become available you should be able to read it.

Many thanks for that, thats great stuff. Seems like the right William Patterson, his Grandmother Alice Patterson (nee Storey) must have been key to his daughter being christened Alice Storey Patterson.
Cheers Ed
