Bertie George Baker
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 10:57 BST (UK) »

Seeking help to locate ‘Bertie George Baker’ on the 1901 census possible in the Lower Swell area of Longdon.  His occupation recorded on his son’s marriage certificate in 1934 was that of Stud Groom.   No other information available

Thanks in advance

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that one.  His son was 21 so at a guess possibly between 40 to 50

what about his own marriage - it would help a lot to know who Bertie's own Father was ...... and see if he married as Bertie or Albert or similar .....

Again that I do not know but what I have found out since posting the topic, the son was born in Pucklechurch, nr Bristol.  That said it's possible the father, Bertie George Baker, may be there and not Longdon as first suggested.  I aplogise for the error and hope the entry can be located there.

might have to do this the long way round and get the son's birth cert to ascertain his mothers full maiden name (altho post 1911 we will see her Maiden surname in the Index)  - so that her marriage to Bertie can be found, and thus reveal the forename Bertie used, plus his own Fathers name !

If you had access to the census you'd see why this is tricky just trying to look at the 1901 for a Bert / Bertie etc ... in any area ...

so whats the son's name - born 1913, married 1934 ... ?

I can only apologise again for misleading you.  The son's name was Bertie William George and called Bertie.  He was KIA 04/04/1945 aged 29

So this Upton on Severn marriage looks good - that Regn District covers Longdon

Marriages Dec 1911

BAKER Bertie G     Upton  Vol 6c Page 539    to   Barnfield  Bertha S

Get the Cert to reveal their Fathers names and we can be bulletproof on the 1901 and earlier census ...

This District of Barton Regis became Chipping Sodbury in 1905 - so this   m  a  y   be yer maun ! (He probably married in the Upton District as it was Bertha's home parish ... )

The 1881 census shows this chap Bertie G, as born Stapleton - which neatly falls into the Barton R district.

You do need to get that Marriage Cert, but this does look promising - his Father wwas a Coachman in 1881

1881 -  RG11/2446; Folio: 98; Page: 12 - Mangotsfield, Keynsham District
Bath Road Downend

Tom Baker 21  Head Domestic Coachman born Glos, Almondsbury
Emma Baker 24  Wife  born ?? London, Rowberrow ?? - see 1891.
Bertie G. Baker    son 5 months  Stapleton

In 1901 ... we see Bertie is a Carpenter - so did he become a Groom by the time he married 10 years later ?

This is why the Cert is important to see if his Father is indeed Tom ...

RG13; Piece: 2348; Folio: 111; Page: 4 - Mangotsfield
17, Church Road

I've correctly transcribed the name to Baker from Flook !

Tom Baker 40  Head Coachman Glos, Almondbury
Emma Baker 44  Wife Somerset Rowberrow
Bertie George Baker 20  son Carpenter Fishponds, Glos
Henry Gilbert Baker 19  son Ag Lab Downend, Glos
Elizabeth Caroline Baker 10  dau do
Etheline Ada Baker 9  dau do
Clifford Eber* Baker 4  son do

*This is correct, it matches the BMD entry
