I hope someone may be able to help. I'm seeking information on the Pugh family of Bishop's Castle (possibly with other districts local to BC)....

Hi,

I am a Pugh who has so far traced my ancestry from Sheffield, South Yorkshire to Clun / Bishop Castle and can confirm a Walter Pugh (b 1767) who Married Mary Hiccins on 09 May 1789 and the Marriage is registered in Bishop Castle, Shropshire.

I believe his father is called Humphrey with mother Elizabeth (Married 01/06/1764 - also Bishop Castle) and has a brother Humphrey (b 1769) I am currently looking into this link and would like to go further but I have no more information at the moment.

I don't know if there is any link helping you between Walter and Humphrey's line or if this is what you are looking for, but I'm sure they will be related one way or another.

If it helps, this is what I have...

To be confirmed
Humphrey Pugh - Elizabeth (Married 01/06/1764 Bishop Castle)
Children: Walter (b 1767 Bishop Castle) & Humphrey (b 1769 Bishop Castle)

Walter Pugh (b 1767) - Mary Hiccins (Married 09/05/1789 Bishop Castle)
Children: Walter (b 1798 Bishop Castle) & Humphrey (b 1803 Bishop Castle)

Humphrey Pugh (b 1803) - Anne Jones (Married 28/09/1826 Bishop Castle)
Children: Walter (b 1836 Bishop Castle)

It appears Walter (b 1836) left Bishop Castle and became a steel foundry man who travelled to find work; married, started a family in Birmingham moving to Leeds, Nr Chesterfield, Barnsley and eventually settling in Sheffield.

Walter Pugh (b 1836) - Mary M. (b1840 Birmingham, Warwickshire)

Charles A. (b 1870 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)
Annie M (b 1873 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)
Emma L. (b 1875 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)
Albert R. (b 1877 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)
Amelia B. (b 1879 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)

John Humphrey (b 1864) - Ellen (b 1864)
Children:
Mary Hancock (b 1886 - Sheffield, Yorkshire) - Step daughter
Anne (b 1895 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)
Bernard (b 1896 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)
Ada (b 1898 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)
Nellie (b 1901 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)

Bernard (b 1896) -  Annie Cliffe (1898 - Sheffield, Yorkshire)
(Married 1916 Sheffield)
Children:
John Leslie (b 1918)
Tom Beric (b 1919)
Murial Betty (b 1921)
Kenneth (b 1923)
Kathleen Joan (b 1925)
Bernard Haydn (b 1934) - My Father
Barbara Anne (b 1937)

Obviously if anyone can help with the Humphry/Walter line in Bishop Castle or Clun, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you wish to have any copies of the the documents I've used to trace my family please feel free to contact me.

I hope someone may be able to help. I'm seeking information on the Pugh family of Bishop's Castle (possibly with other districts local to BC).

As far as I can make out, the family were as follows:

Richard & Elizabeth Pugh:
Children:
Richard, 1805/6.
Thomas, 1814.
Sarah 1815 (died in infancy).
Sarah, 1816. Jane 1820.
Most or all of these children were born in Bishop's Castle.

I think the son, Richard, had a wife, Ann, as they lived next door to Thomas' wife in a later census and had the same profession as Thomas (Coachman).

The names of the parents are an educated guess, having found the sister, Sarah, living with thomas' wife... and then running an IGI search (which is how I found all the others bar Richard).

Thomas married Hannah Padmore in 1832 in High Ercall, and they had their children in Bishop's Castle:
John Richard Pugh, 1840
Alice Pugh 1843
Twins Lucy & Margaret Pugh, 1845
Thomas Pugh, 1847/48
James Pugh 1850
Rose Pugh 1854

If anyone can give me some clues about this family prior to 1871, I would be very grateful. I am keen to establish confirmation of some of the relatives, particularly the siblings and parents of Thomas, and any occupations not yet established. Obviously the main area of interest is in the census returns of 1861 & earlier, but anything which might add information would be much appreciated.

Apart from the probable brother, Richard, and his wife, Ann.. I have no details of spouses of Thomas' siblings (Sarah & Jane).

Can anyone help?

Just a snippet of info for you, a Sarah Pugh was present at the death of my gg grandfather, William Humphreys according to his Death Cert. He died aged 40, in October 1865 in Bishops Castle. He was Relieving Officer for the poor in Bishops Castle. I believe at the time he was living in Church Street, Bishops Castle

It's certainly possible, as Sarah Pugh 1816 did not marry and was listed in censuses at least until 1861
