My Great Grandfather was born 18 September 1846 in Aylebeare Devon. He married Harriet Goss at Hythe in the Parish of Fawley on 23 July 1866, as far as I know they had 2 sons Thomas George born 1867 & Frederick born 1870. Harriet remarried in 1875 on the I of W and stated that she was a widow.
I have all the certification of the life events and census records bar one, namely the death/burial of George, I have tried both Sanders and Saunders spelling as there has been much confusion with regards to his surname.
I cannot find any trace of George on the 1871 census but have found Harriet living with a brother and family in Southampton.
George had been living in the Southampton area since 1850
Any help would be appreciated Terry

Does Harriet state that she is a widow in 1871 on the census? Can you tell us the reference, please? Do the children stay as Saunders/Sanders for later census?
Thomas the elder son is brought up by his Goss Grandparents and I have him on census with them until he died in Tunbridge aged 18. He always was a Saunders by name.
The 1871 census has both Harriet and Frederick as Sanders with her brother Henry Goss RG10 Piece 1188 Folio 105 page 24 District Southampton St Mary. No,she said married.
What I meant to add to the first message was that George was Saunders on top line of his wedding cert. but where he signed he was a Sanders!
As I stated I have all certs except for the death cert for George

My Grandfather was always a Saunders with the exception of the 1871 Census where he was Sanders, he joined the army and police force as a Saunders also.

Do check out the resources/links section of the Hampshire board here on RootsChat. There are links to various parish registers which are available online - unfortunately not all of them.
After 1837 is perhaps not as well covered by transcriptions. Hampshire GS publish Monumental Inscriptions on microfiche, but I'm not sure of the dates that these cover.
They also have a Burial Index (published on CD or on FamilyHistoryOnline/FindMyPast) but that only covers burials up to 1837.

PS Checked out Fawley All Saints, but no George Saunders/Sanders of the correct age there. A George Saunders died aged 39 on the Isle of Wight in 1872. Not quite the right age though.
