Hi Charlotte, I had a word with a solicitor who has overseen wills both in Scotland and England and he reckoned it was mainly a matter of convenience where probate was granted. If the assets were in England there is more probability that probate was granted there, but it could even be granted in both Scotland and England if some assets were found in both countries, but less likely.

No hard and fast rule - sounds like a typical lawer´s answer if you ask me!

Guid hunting,

Thrall,
How kind of you to ask your solicitor friend- and yes, it does sound like a lawyer's answer... on the one hand this, on the other that etc.
I guess it means  looking at the English probate calendars to see what is there. That's what I am most familiar with- then if it's not there it will be in Scotland.

Thank you again for your help and kindness.

Hi Linda. I found this site and your posting as I had googled Robert Nicol - who was my great x3 grandad. I am descended from Robert & Elizabeth through his son also called Robert, and grandson Archibald. Are you from that line or another sibling?

I have information on Robert & Elizabeths parents- but no further back than that. If you were to have anymore info it would be much appreciated! Or if you would like any information from me.
kind regards
Mrs Berry

Hello BlueTans

Awfully nice of you. If you find time, could you please get details for either of these marriages:

Elizabeth Miller married Robert Nicol on 10 AUG 1855 in Lesmahagow, Lanark.  I found this on the IGI.

Mary Rainnie (nee Brown) widow married James Mitchell in Leswalt, Wigtownshire in 1903.

Thank you for the kind offer and hopefully I will be able to help you out in return some time.

Linda

Hi Linda

Wow, thanks so much for your reply - it was really interesting to hear about Marion. And it helped me find her grandparents on the later census- previous to this I had no idea they were around under a different spelling of Millar, or even knew Marion was Elizabeths first child.

I wanted to email you, as you did me,  but couldn't figure out how to email you, as am new to this site. I would be interested in Elizabeths birth/death info -and her parents death info.

It is funny to think we are related through Elizabeth. I now live in Cambridge, England, but was born in Scotland.
When looking on the 1851 census I saw that Elizabeths dad William was from Edinburgh. This is where my information dries up, as I do not know who his parents were. I also know nothing about Marion Browns's parents.
Its really hard to trace pre census, when you do not know the names of their parents. It must be annoying you can't find Marion Millars birth certificate.

Anyway if I can be of any help please let me know. kind regards.
