Yorkshire (WR) PR transcripts for free
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 20:07 BST (UK) »

The Internet Archive in its "Texts" section has many Yorkshire Parish Register Society publications available for free download.  So many that there are bound to be some WR parishes, but I've not checked.

Keywords for the site's search function: Yorkshire (England) -- Genealogy Sources.  Restrict the search to media type "Texts" for better results.

Or click this link.

Most seem to be North Yorks, East Yorks and York itself, but there are some WR including Wakefield and Thornhill (by Dewsbury).

Very well digitised and each volume is fully searchable. You do have to look at the title page of each volume to know which parish it is.

might seem like a silly question but where does it say which parish they are?

Not an easy site to find your way around  Undecided. perth, I think the names are on the front of each book  Undecided

I've been clicking on the word 'publications' - then going to another page with the annoying flashing books which you can't see the title of - then clicking on the book - then  turning a few pages so I can see what parish it is - then clicking on the back button to go back as none have been relevant to my research ... is there an easier way? What I am doing wrong?

Is there just a simple list of the parishes they have?

Have you had a look at the advanced search?  Shocked ... phew.

Potentially a good resource and I shouldn't complain as it's free ... but,  - it does make you wonder who designed it and what they were thinking Undecided

You and I had the same idea, Perth.

The Hickleton one doesn't appear to have a volume number.

I managed these before I got fed up:

Vol. 1 Aldborough 1538-1611
   "   80 Ripon 1574-1628
      90 Great Ayton 1600-1812
      24 Howden 1543-1702
      49 Darrington 1567-1812
       3 Horbury 1598-1812
       6 Patrington 1570-1731
       8 Blacktoft 1700-1812
      12 Brantingham 1653-1812
      15 Cherry Burton 1561-1740.

I hope someone else can do the rest - there's 30 in all - if not, I'll have a go later.

On the basis that I'd started so I'll finish (!), here we go with the rest of the Yorkshire PRs on this site (dates are not necessarily for all CMBs):

Vol 16 Marske in Cleveland 1570-1812
17 Hartshead 1612-1812
19 Bolton by Bolland 1558-1724
20 Pickhill cum Roxby 1567-1812
28 Gargrave 1558-1812
29 Terrington 1599-1812
33 Otley 1562-1672
34 Rothwell 1690-1812
38 Settrington 1559-1812
39 Austerfield 1559-1812
40 Thornhill C 1743-1812; M 1746-53; B 1678-1812 +
      Flockton CMB 1713-1812
41 Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, York 1573-1812
42 Thirsk 1556-1721
43 Danby In Cleveland 1585-1812
44 Otley 1672-1753
48 Howden 1725-1770
50 Harewood 1614-1812
52 St Mary, Bishophill Junior, York 1602-1812
53 Thornhill M 1754-1812 ; Banns 1788-1812+
     Flockton C&B 1717-1812

Sorry about the jumbled order but that's the way they come up on the site - it really isn't very easy to navigate.

There are also a few PRs from other counties - worth checking out.

Many thanks to Stovepipe for finding the site.  Grin

Oh well done Jill. I had it in mind to do but you've beaten me to it!

I spent ages a few months ago going through the Thornhill records on Ancestry, waiting for what seemed like hours for each page to load. This one is much more pleasant to use, and you can search it when you've found the correct volume.

Oh, that's really good of you Jill.  Kiss Now it's a useful resource.  Wink I ran out of patience when I got to Brantingham.

Now why couldn't they have put that information beside the appropriate PR where it could easily be seen?  Undecided

By the way, does anyone know if they are adding more?

jill, Thank you for that work done.
Agree that whovere set up the site- bless him for that- didn't understand  how slow the search was to find a parish.
