Peter Allen
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 20:49 BST (UK) »

I am trying to discover where my gt gt gfather disappeared to between 1861 until 1901.
He was b. 1822 Harwood, Lancashire (nr. Bolton). Married 1851 and had 2 children. I believe his wife died 1857, and the children were brought up by their relatives in Lancashire. I can find no trace of him in UK census until just before his death back in Harwood in 1901. The 1901 census lists him as a retired gold miner. I wonder whether he emigrated to a gold field area?
I have posted the same request on the US and S. Africa forums as I'm not sure which is the more likely!
Thanks , Maggie
