1851 census look-up Susannah Griffin
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 21:22 BST (UK) »

I'm looking for a Susannah Griffin in the 1851 census.
In other censuses her birthyear is  1842 to 1844, and they all say she was born in Derby, so I'm hoping the census will give me her parent's names.

Could someone find her for me please.

Eric

Her birth is on freebmd but I can't find her in 1851.  In 1861 she is a visitor with the Fletcher family in Derbyshire

I wonder if this could be her on the 1851 for 9 New St Derby

All b Derby

Matthew Ford 50  sawyer
Ellen Ford 52
Bessy Ford 23
Walter Ford 21
Matthew Ford 17
Mary Ford 15
Susanna Griffin Ford 7  shown as daughter

In 1841 Matthew & Ellen were married so bang goes my theory that Susanna was Ellen's daughter from a previous marriage.  In addition to the children shown in 1851 they had a daughter Frances who was 18 in 1841

Per freebmd

Frances Ford and Thomas Griffin on the same page - June qtr 1843 Derby Vol 19 page 415 - same qtr that Susanna was born

The only Frances Griffin I can find in Derbyshire in later censuses was married to George and her maiden name was Dudson

Hi Carole
Thanks for the replies. All very intriguing!!!!
I had hoped the 1851 would have given me her parents without having to pay for her birth cert.  I am an old miser!!!!! Susannah is a bit on the fringe of the family I am looking at. Might have to look at Thomas Griffin's marriage cert as well!!!!!!  My first thought is that she was the illegitimate daughter of one of the Ford daughters, probably Frances. It was not uncommon for the father's surname to be added as a second christian name in such cases or possibly she was Susannah Griffin and she was living with the Fords and the enumerator wrote down the names and put dittos all the way down. I wonder if she was baptised??? Will look into that.

I did write a thank you just after your second message last night but it appears to have dissapeared into the ether, so probably someone somewhere received a message which they can't understand.
Thanks again

Hi Eric

I would just go for the birth cert as I'm 99.9% certain it will be Frances & Thomas as parents

Hi Carole

Just to let you know that you were right about Susanna Griffin being the daughter of Thomas Griffin and Frances Ford as I now have the birth cert.
I would think the Ford in her name in the 1851 census is just a case of an enumerator's mistake.
I still haven't found Thomas or Frances in 1861, but Frances reappears in 1871 as a widow & an embroiderer. I would think Thomas probably died before 1837. She is also in the 1891 census living with John Fletcher and his wife Susanna (Frances's daughter) but she is given the surname Fletcher and is recorded as "mother"!!!!!!

If those people had realised what a lot of trouble they were to cause in another 120 or so years they might have been a bit more careful!!!!!!!!!!!

regards

Not unless Frances married a corpse in 1843!!  (Couldn't resist that one - sorry)

I'm going to have a look for both Thomas & Frances in the 1851/61 so will get back to you

Now that was easier than I thought as I vaguely remember trying to find them at the time of my last posts

1851 - Transcribed as GERFFIN 31 Carter Place Derbyshire

Thomas Griffin 31 no occ shown b Derby
Frances   28  embroiderer b Derby
Walter   5 can't decipher his birthplace but there is a Derbyshire birth on freebmd
Elizabeth   2  b Derby

HO107; Piece: 2143; Folio: 44; Page: 28

I think Walter died 1868 - per freebmd

No joy in 1861 but Frances re-married in the June qtr of 1871 to William Waterfield

1881 for 6 Hopkinsons Yard Chesterfield

William Waterfield 60 b Derby - gas stoker
Frances 57 b Derby
Elizabeth Argyle 9 grand daughter b Derby

Thanks Carole
I deserved it!!!! My brain must have been going last night , I kept getting birth dates and marriage dates mixed up.

I did find the marriage of Thomas Griffin and Frances Ford on the IGI and I'm sure I looked for it before without finding it!!!!!!!!!
