Can anyone help with Audlem PRs please?
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 10:16 BST (UK) »

I've come to a grinding halt with my STUBBS family of Moreton Say in Shropshire.

However, from the early pre 1730 parish records of Audlem in Cheshire (very near Moreton Say) are quite a few STUBBS entries.

Does anyone have access to the Audlem PRs just after 1730?

I'm particularly looking for any children baptised to Thomas & Mary STUBBS from 1750 onwards.

Any help would be much appreciated.
 Cheesy

I'm going to post this on the Shropshire Board as well.

Hi Jill

I can certainly have a look for any children they might have had baptised at Audlem.  I take that you already have Thomas and Mary Stubb's marriage?

Thanks Jayson - that would be great.

Yes, Thomas Stubbs and Mary Roe married in Ightfield, Shrops 7 Jan 1750 - I believe Mary came from Ightfield.

The problems are:

- they don't seem to have had any children baptised in Moreton Say (or Ightfield) before 1758 so I'm wondering where they were between 1750 and 1758 and if they had any earlier children (possibly named Thomas and Mary after their parents?)

- a contact who is also a 'Stubbs hunter' has found a possible ancestry for Thomas Stubbs in Audlem and a place called Wilkesley which is even nearer to Moreton Say, but unfortunately her parish records stop at 1730.

I should perhaps explain that Moreton Say is where the Stubbs family seem to have settled for generations after this.

Hope you can help.  Kiss

Hi Jill

Sorry for the the delay in getting back to you.

I searched through the Audlem parish registers for the period 1750-1760, and this, I'm afraid, only revealed one baptism for a child with a father called Thomas Stubs [sic].  The mother's name wasn't given in the register:

2 Nov 1755 THOMAS s/o Thomas Stubs, baptised

I also found these Stubbs entries which may be of interest

10 Jun 1753 John s/o John Stubs, baptised

28 Dec 1753 Hannah Stubs, widow, buried

13 Mar 1757 ______ d/o John Stubs, baptised

10 July 1759 Elizabeth wife of John Stubs, buried

I can extend the search beyond 1760 if you think that might be of help to you.

Hi Jayson,

Thanks very much for those. A bit disappointing that there's only the one baptism for a child of Thomas Stubbs, but that's the way it goes!  Roll Eyes

It's a bit difficult to connect them up, so, if it's okay, I'd like to take you up on your kind offer, but could you please extend the search back to 1730?

I'm not sure if you've got a copy of these PRs or whether you're going to the local RO, so don't know how much of your time I'm taking up! If you can manage it, any Stubbs BMDs 1730-50 would be much appreciated.  Cheesy

Hi Jill

No problem! My local library has the Audlem parish registers, and I only live a five minute walk away, and usually pop in most days if I get time.

Thanks Jayson.

I shall have to sit down and have a good look at all the info you've sent me and see how/if it fits in with my Shropshire Stubbs.

Much appreciated.  Grin
