Hardy Street/Fisher Street Maidstone
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 12:35 BST (UK) »

Hi

There is an unusual looking building on the corner of Hardy Street and Fisher Street in Maidstone, does anyone know what this used to be? It was a computer shop, but that has now closed down. It has an unusual tower on the corner and very elaborate stonework. I was wondering if it was a private house built and owned by someone eccentric or something else?

Any pointers on how to look into this would be great

Thanks

Laura

I think I know the building you mean.  I assumed it was OTT Victorian architecture.

Have you found it in any of the census?  It should tell you whether is was a residential or commercial property

I'm not sure if the property is in Hardy St or Fisher St. Huh
Nor how the streets are numbered.

On the 1881 census Montague KELSEY was a grocer at 1 Fisher Street, so perhaps it was always a shop.
2 Hardy Street was occupied by William ASHENDEN, a newspaper sub-editor.
