I am searching for the origins of my 5th gt.grandmother, Elizabeth Fearn/Fern.
She married Charles Wheate of London in Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire 11 Jul 1782, so I assume that was possibly her birthplace.
I have a suggested birth date of around 1764, but that may well be wrong.
Any guidance would be much appreciated as Derbyshire is a new area of research for me
Mike.

Hi Mike
Earl Sterndale is coverd on the BIVRI but the records don't start until 1765. There are no other Fearn/ Fern baptisms after that date.

Thanks Carol,
I just discovered that Charles and Elizabeth's first 3 children; Mary, William and Ann were christened at Hartington, so it looks possible that they lived there between 1782 and about '87, before moving back to London, where Charles was a goldsmith, as was his father Jeremiah.
It sure is harder tracing people before 1800 . . .
Mike.

Hi Mike
There are a couple at Hartington.
Elizabeth Fern bapt. 6 march 1769 to John Fern & Mary.
Betty Fern bapt 1 March 1754 to Thomas Fern & Alice.
There was also one at Darley which isn't too far away.
Elizabeth Fern bapt. 4 Jan 1763 to Henry Fern & Rachel

Thanks for looking again
I think the dates make the first two unlikely, though not impossible. 1754 would make her 46 when her last child was born, 1769 would make her 13 at marriage
The Darley one is a definite possibility, but the parents names don't re-appear anywhere in later generations.
I'll put them all in the "maybe" file for now.
Mike.

Update - in case anyone is interested:
Someone kindly looked at the chldren's christenings for me and discovered that Charles and Elizabeth were actually living at Heathcote, a hamlet near Hartington
Working on the dubious assumption that Betty Fern, daughter of Thos & Alice Fern of Heathcott, was the correct christening, I just spent half an hour with the IGI, building a credible, but highly speculative family tree for Elizabeth Fern, with 10 ancestors. There are 3 new first names, not previously used in the family, but which subsequently reappear in later generations. I've pencilled them all in for now, and uploaded Elizabeth's tree to Ancestry, with a note to say it is speculative . . . to see if it stirs any interest. Well, I couldn't think of anything else right now.
I'm also going to request the marriage licence from Lichfield, if they have it.
Mike.
