How many Jane Ewings were there?
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 21:47 BST (UK) »

I thought I had a positive contact on Genesreunited and we exchanged trees. I had a Jane Ewings marrying a Francis Marshall in 1869 in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire, Scotland, according to the Family Search IGI. My contact had a Jane Ewings marrying an Alexander McClymont in 1870 and, believe it or not, when I checked IGI there was even another Jane Ewings marrying ..... Kerr in 1969 in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire, too!

Stoneykirk was only a small place, I think, in those days. Was there only one Jane Ewings who married all three fellows? Have Family Search made a mistake about one or all of these marriages? Can anyone confirm my marriage of Francis Marshall please and what happened to the union thereafter?

Any usefull suggestions welcomed.

Thanks,

Judy

Have you checked them on the 1871 census, Judy?

I'll see what I can find  Smiley

There do appear to be 3 Jane Ewings marrying in Stoneykirk:

1869 - William Kerr
1869 - Francis Marshall
1870 - Alexander MacClymont

No, I haven't Gadget. I was thinking it's about time I had another investment in SP. It's a few weeks since I did just that.

There's not much activity on the Wigtownshire site these days and I thoroughly expected your arrival! Wink Wink Wink Wink

Thanks. How strange, I didn't think that the name Jane Ewing would be so popular. I wonder if she's one and the same?

Hi -

I have stopped being surprised at multiple occurrences of just about any name...

If you look at all the birth and marriage records for Ewing/Ewings, and Ewen/Ewens in Wigtown   http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyWigtown.htm#PageTitle

You will see it was a pretty popular surname there.

Between 1840 and 1847 there DID indeed to see at least 3 Janes born in Stoneykirk.

Yes, Gadget, it certainly sounds/feels like it. They all appeared to live in "Cots" at that time.

I have claimed the same parents for Jane Ewings as the contact on Genesreunited but  I have just found some others on Family Search. Should I try to persuade my contact to check out his names or remain  quiet?

Thanks.

I hastily cancelled the viewing of trees on the Genesreunited contact but I am sure that one of his Jane Ewings offsprings was "Matthew" . I have found on IGI another set of parents of Jane Ewing(s) with the name of Matthew so this could reinforce my case.

There's quite an age difference between those two, isn't there, and she was born in Ireland, which negates my previous ramblings.

Oh, dear, these blessed Marshalls. I haven't found one who stays the course yet!

Thanks. Maybe they didn't have children as she was so old?

Thanks for all your hard work, Gadget, once again.

We did drawing at the over-60s watercolour painting class this am. We had to draw a chair, umbrella, wellington boots, coat hanging on chair and ordnance survey map on chair. I can honestly say that I liked the chair bit best and the rest, well, there's room for improvement. How long have I got? Huh

Give up the watercolours and use charcoal on a big A1 sheet of cartridge paper  Grin

Is Jane a direct ancestor, cos if she is, it must have been before she married Frank  Undecided
