I am researching my fathers family in Surrey England he was born there in 1920 his name was Wilfred King his fathers name was also wilfred.How do I find my way around English records in Surrey.

FreeBMD is transcribing the civil registration index for births, marriages and deaths and placing it online elcetronically.

The year 1920 seems to have been fully indexed but there are no Wilfred King births registered in districts within Surrey on FreeBMD.
You are allowed up to 6 weeks to register a birth so if someone is born towards the end of the year it is possible their birth is registered in the following year's quarter. There is a Wilfred King registered in the March quarter of 1921 in a Surrey district.

His mother's maiden name is given as Penton. You don't give any details for your grandmother. Was Penton her maiden name?

Civil registration birth, marriage and death certificates can be ordered from the General Registry Office if you think this is your father's birth certificate.

It is a little difficult as my parents divorced my father passed away in 2005 I have been given an army record that gives his birth as 23rd November 1917 but many army records were not accurate.

Gayle, do you have an idea when your parents were married as the certificate might have a more accurate birth date?  Another thought, if you can give  details of your fathers full name & where he died in 2005 the GRO index will give a dob (obviously based on the information given by the informant)  From here you can work back in logical steps rather than leap-frogging  Wink

Given that you have 6 weeks to register a birth it is perfectly possible that a birth towards the end of the previous year is registered in the next quarter (January, February, March) of the following year.

This would indicate Lilian's marriage to Wilfred senior was her second. Both marriages occuring in Wiltshire.
