MARY DUNTON Murdered c 1767
« on: Thursday 03 April 08 11:28 BST (UK) »

I found an online reference to the hanging of Sarah Addington in 1767 for the murder of Mary Dunton. As I have many Duntons in my family tree I was wondering if anyone has details of this case.

Hi Yvonne

The only burial of a Mary Dunton in Beds at the right time was at Shillington on 9 May 1767. Justice was speedy in those days as Sarah Addington was hanged on 3 August 1767.

There were quite a lot of Addingtons in Shillington according to the Hugh Wallis site/IGI

Perhaps the burial entry might expand on what happened

Regards

David

Yes. This was the site I originally found. It certainly was  rough justice for many!

Yvonne, I think she must be connected to our Southill Duntons, probably via the John who went to Shillington. Can't find her though - have you had any luck?

And yes please Sandy, could you let me have a copy too please

Thanks

No, David, but I haven't spent a great deal of time on it. I think I need to sort out the whole Dunton clan. I have contacted Beds Archives and they are going to look. It may well be a good idea to try and contact the original researcher if possible. What do you think?

ADDINGTON
« Reply #10 on: Sunday 06 April 08 00:13 BST (UK) »

There was a young ADDINGTON boy from Wilstead hanged for arson in 1832 - he set fire to a haystack.   I read about the case some years ago and it seemed very harsh [Wilstead is near Shillington] it seems likely the two ADDINGTONs are related although I have only researched ADDINGTON branches in East Bedfordshire.

Confusing?

ADDINGTONs are online at tribalpages.com

But other ADDINGTONs are poor - the Wilstead lad was hanged and others were killed it seems

Please see Beds Archives "blars adlib"
and Bedford Gaol page - lots of info there
