Hi Aussie Jack
Welcome to Rootschat.
I have been part of a small group of rootschatters investigating the Traies family in Devon and Middlesex. The thread is http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,237289.210.html Two of the Traies girls married William Henry Roffe and George Roffe, both sons of John Roffe, who was a gardener. I believe he may be a brother of Edward.

Hi again Aussie Jack
I've now found the information I was sent by a contact re the Roffe family. I know that oldmanriver who is also on the Traies thread I posted before is interested in the Roffe family.
James and Elizabeth Roffe children: Mary Roffe born 5 April 1796, Tonbridge, Kent and christened 24 April 1796, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. George Roffe born 5 May 1798, Tonbridge Edward Roffe James Roffe - christened 15 April 1803, Tonbridge John Roffe - born 10 Jan 1804, Tonbridge and christened 24 Jan 1804, Tunbridge Wells Richard Roffe - born 25 September 1805, Tonbridge and christened 20 October 1805, Tunbridge Wells
From IGI - James Roffe born about 1772 of Tonbridge and married about 1795, Tonbridge. Also Sybbalah Roffe born about May 1802, Tonbridge, daughter of James and Elizabeth.
I don't know how accurate this information is as I have never looked very closely into it as the Roffe family are not my direct line.

Just checked the Hugh Wallis site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/ and can confirm the following John Roffe born 10 Jan 1804 and christened 29 Jan 1804 at Mount Ephraim, Lady Huntingdons, Tunbridge Wells. Edward also christened there on 8 December 1799. George Roffe born 5 March 1798 and christened 8 April 1798 again at Mount Ephraim, Lady Huntingdons and Richard Roffe as I stated above at the Mount Ephraim, Lady Huntingdons.
No sign of the others though.

Hi Kerry
Thank you for your welcome note.
All I have and know is that Edward Roffe (b 1799) (m) - Sarah Gibbs in 1823. (Edward was an agriculturalsit)
Edward was a son of James & Elizabeth (Wonger) Roffe. James Roffe's occupation was a brick-maker.
I don't know any of James & Elizabeth's other children, but I know Edward was born at Tunbridge.
Edward & Sarah had 7 children born in England was recorded as being in 'Leight' Kent. . . George, Hannah, Mary, James, Jane, Harriet, Sarah and Caroline. Three other children:- Eliza, Matalida and Alice were born in Australia. Their son George who was born about 1823 - died very young in England.
In 1839 Edward and his young family mirgrated to Australia.
I never had any record of other children to James & Elizabeth Roffe or those before. But they were from Tunbridge and I guess the ones you listed are their other children.
Your help and time, was appreciated
Jack

A useful website that may help you with pre 1837 records and has some coverage of the Tunbridge Wells area in Kent is www.familyhistoryonline.co.uk There is a small charge, you buy credits and can buy as little as £5 a go. It might help and I am going to see what I can find too.

Hi Jack
Kerry thought I may be able to help you with your ROFFE family of Tunbridge Wells, but I don't really think I can.
My husband has an ancestor Ann TRAIES who married a George ROFFE in 1842 in Marylebone (London). The birthplace of this George ROFFE was Speldhurst, which is part of Tunbridge Wells in Kent. George had been born in 1816 (according to the age given on census returns) and he was the son of a John ROFFE, farmer. The occupation of George was Coachman.
We know that George ROFFE also had a brother called William Henry ROFFE born in 1812 in Tonbrige Wells Kent. He was a carpenter by trade and married Jane TRAIES (sister of the above Ann TRAIES) in Marylebone, London, also in 1842.
Apart from knowing the name of their father (John) We have not yet traced the family any further back and know of no other siblings for George and William Henry ROFFE, although there probably are brothers and sisters undiscovered as yet. I do not think that your Edward was their brother (born 1799). George did call one of his own sons Edward though, and another was called James. Maybe your Edward and my George will turn out to be cousins, but at present I am unable to connect your ancestors and my own.
Edward had already left for Australia before the two ROFFE brothers married in London in 1842. George and Ann ROFFE and family continued to live in Marylebone. William Henry and Jane and family left London and went back to Tonbridge Wells to live in about 1846.
Good luck with your hunting!
Bernice

Realised I just said that John ROFFE was a farmer. This is incorrect - he was said to be a gardener on the marriage certificate of his son George.
Sorry for the mistake. I suppose the occupation of gardener is nearer to that of Edward in Australia.
