George Powell - b. 1824 (Hay-on-Wye)
« on: Thursday 03 April 08 15:56 BST (UK) »

I think I'm in the right section.

I am trying to find a little in formation regarding an ancestor of mine. . . all i know is the following.

George Powell - born Febraury 1824.
On his tombstone where he died in Australia in 1881, it reads the following.

George Powell, born February 1824
Hay County of Brecon, England

I assume that it was Hay-on-Wye (Brecon)
Co. Herefordshire, as I cannot find any other explaination.

We have searched records of Marriages in Australia, and found no marriage record.  So he would have married in England before coming to Australia.

I know I have very little to go on here - but its all I have.  I do hope someone would be able to throw some light on the subject.,

Thank you. . . . .Jack (Australia)

Hi Jack, welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

Hay is in the county of Breconshire, Wales, sits on the border with Herefordshire, England.

Do you know when he emigrated?  There are quite a few George Powells in the 1841 census, but this census doesn't give place of birth only whether born in county or not, so looking at 1851 census a possibility for George

Hi Susan

Thanks for that - wasn't quite sure were it was situated.

We are uncertain exactly were he lived, and when he migrated with his wife to Australia - still searching that part of the missing link here in Australia.

Although they died have daughter Emma born 1855 - now there's no record of Emma being born here in Australia, although on Emma's death certificate (1942) it states that she was born in Australia - but no record of it exists.

Also on her death certificate - it states that her father's name was James Powel, yet when her father died in 1881, on his tombstone it says George Powell - its confusing.

So Im guessing that the daughter was born in August 1855 in England as there is no record here.

Hi Jackie,

Thank you for that information - and many thanks to you Susan for your help.  Now I know abit more than what I originally started with.

Now - that they are the correct family - I wil continuing looking for marriage record of George & Mary Powell, and the daughter that Im sure was born in England - no in Australia.

Once again many thanks to you both

Hi Jackie
I never heard my grandmother ever spoken of grandmother having a brother - but thats not to say there wasn't one.  She thought her grandmother was an only child. . .

Just went through some old photos of tombstones and states that Emma Powell (daughter) was 84 when she died in 1942, so should have been born about 1858 - it jsut didn't add up regarding 1855.

Once I find out when they left there for Australia (arrival records here in Australia) then I can tie everything in.

Once again thank you for your help

Jack
        Found this on N.S.W. BMD.
Marriage:-
Thomas Waters Powell + Emily Puckett 1876
Yass District.

Could this be the Thomas b.1851 at Hay.

Hi Jackie

Could be - I never looked up Thomas Powell as never knew he exsisted - though - the Powell family did settled at YASS, NSW,  so it would have to be him for sure.

So it looks like that George & Mary Powell had children in England/Wales then migrated to Australia . . . .

Thank you for looking that one up - here I am searching the bdm in the UK, and forgetting about the Australian records.

Thank you again

I just search the last of the shipping records and seems they came to Australia in 1855 - on the vessel 'Constitution'

George age 30
Mary age 30
Thomas age 4
George F. (an infant)

So Emma Powell must have been born in Australia, I will looking in the Australian records again.  Though this looks to be the family.

The infant 'George F' must have been born on the voyage over to Australia.

Now - I know a little about the Powell family in Wales, George's father being Richard Powell.

Many thank for your helps
