Hello everyone,
I have been trying to solve a passenger list problem to Australia with my uncle on board to no avail. You were very helpful to me earlier on with Alfred Leslie Dobson but I still can't complete his story.
ALD was born 1907 in Maidenhead Berkshire and I have a record of his first trip to Australia which was in 1928 and he was classed as a "Passage Worker" ex Port Brisbane. I even have a photograph of the ship!
Now he must have travelled back to England before 1932 because he married Mabel in the December quarter of 1932 which was registered in Eton. I can find nothing about his return to England and nothing of his journey back to Australia after his marriage. Mabel Dobson sailed alone on the Hobson's Bay (aged 25) from Southampton to Adelaide on the 12 May 1936.
To dot the i's and cross the t's would be great. So if anything could be found on these two journeys I would be very grateful. I have looked everywhere I can.
They settled in Adelaide and he joined the AIF in July 1940 and I have now bought his army record and know that he was classed as missing in April 1942 and as a POW in Malaya in June 1943 and eventually recovered from Changi in September 1945.
So, fingers crossed, Abiam

Is it possible that he was a crew member 'working his passage' going back to England then back out to OZ?

Hi Bob, Yes, I had thought of that but I have lost the contact who found me his first trip and I don't know where to start looking for passage workers. Just thought someone might know, Thanks for your thoughts, Abiam

I think those passenger lists are not complete. I've just been searching the index for my Bentleys who came to Sydney in the 1890s - have searched for each parent and their children, by surname only, and for the wife's sister who probably came with them - nothing! They must have been good swimmers....

And I've been searching for every variation possible for a Euston/Enston arrival in Australia or New Zealand as well, with absolutely no luck at all.

Dee and MarieC,
Should I be able to find a 'Passage Worker' list? I feel they would be different to the more usual passenger lists.
Also is anyone having problems searching the NAA? I tried yesterday and after waiting ages for my search to load it just stopped. I'll have another go this morning!
Regards, Abiam

As far as I know, there is no such thing as a passage worker list.
You may like to search crew lists for this information. See the thread on passenger lists for Eastern Australia on this board, or the "Australia Resources" board for places to search.
Here in Oz, we can search for assisted immigrants (mainly on the Net) and unassisted migrants (microfilms in libraries, which isn't going to help you much, I fear!) On the microfilms I have searched, the crew is listed separately to passengers. There is no other category.

Thanks MarieC,
I shall have a look at those. I'm sure he worked his passage back to UK and then back to Adelaide before his wife came out. Makes sense to me!

Good luck with it, Abiam! You may very well be right, in which case I feel you will find him in crew lists! Let us know if you have any success.
