Help, how do i trace german ancestors? Getting nowhere fast.

I have been trawling the net in the hope of finding something promising but nothing yet.
I am looking for info on LOUIS DICKS b Stargadt c1828 He came here pre 1856 and wed a lady from Holland whom i also want to find. I have all census info 1861+ and all kids, so its pre 1856 that i need. Where do i look? Nothing on IGI. (I'm not sure about the wife, LEAH LEMON but Louis was Jewish if this helps.)

Yes it is! I am trying to find them in Germany or Holland. Nothing on the IGI fits, do you know of anywhere else i might look?
