Quincey's
« on: Thursday 03 April 08 22:21 BST (UK) » |

I am researching a Quincey family of Leicester who lived in the St Mary's area from 1841 onwards. The spelling of Quincey is sometimes Quinsey and my direct descendents changed this to 'De' Quincey for some reason.
Can anyone suggest a reason why they began prexfixing their surname with 'De', it makes researching them extremely difficult! No other family members assumed the 'De' prefix just my Grt Grt Grt Grandparents and their child.
Would like to hear from any fellow Quincey researchers with connections to Leicester.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply and info.
My Quinceys married at St Margaret's in May 1830 (William and Sarah Abbott Squires) and their first born alleged to be Nov 1830.
I am wondering if anyone can help to locate where and when William died. He was born 1814 in St Mary's Hinckley and I have found him at home with the family on only one census, 1851 in Leicester. He appears to be alive and well in 1881 working as a bricklayer from another source, but that's the last I know about him. He could have died in Leics or a neighbouring county and my searches so far have been without success. Could someone please help to locate where and when William Quincey died, he's not buried in any family plot at Welford Road cemetery, Leics.
Cheers

Hi Again Mike,
Yes thankyou they are my Quincey's. Good to know we are both finding the same information.
The only baptism I am missing is for Charles Edward Quincey who was born on 9th October 1839, St Mary's, Leicester. To same parents William Quincey and Sarah Abbott.
I've searched but found nothing yet and I am beginning to think he was not baptised?
Can anyone explain why some children were never baptised? I imagine it could be just family tradition or circumstancesat at the time? Would there have been a charge involved, as that may have been a big factor in affordability?
Just seems strange that some children were and others appear not to have been.
Thanks again
