What has happened to Cumberland/Cumbria ?
« on: Friday 04 April 08 01:37 BST (UK) »

In trying to trace William (George) Story etc, supposedly born in Carlisle abt 1816, father John (and the subject of a much previous post, with no takers), we thought to try searching on freeREG.

In freeREG it is a requirement that you enter the County.

But there is no provision for Cumberland, or Cumbria.   Huh

Why ?   Where have you all gone ??    Huh   Huh       Cry

Presumably, no Cumberland records have yet been transcribed.  You can see the list of places that have some transcriptions on the left.

Like FreeBMD, they're always looking for volunteers to contribute their time.  Thesee things don't just happen Wink

I volunteered weeks ago (not for Lancashire) and didn't even get a negative response.  If they need people to transcribe, you'd think they would contact the people volunteering.

Lizzie

Where did you volunteer at?Huh

I work for Cumbria Libraries and Archives service, and if you'd volunteered for us we would/should have "snapped" you up straight away. Otherwise it would be an Admin/Network error.

We have a limited budget and rely heavily on volunteers, please don't take a "negative" response personally.........Our contracted "IT" people are beyond our control...........PLEASE don't give up.............Try again...........we are crying out for you!!

PS to jeenie

1816 for William (George) Story is before the BMD register..........so need to look in parish regs.

If you can supply me with a parish, I may be able to help you?

Can't promise to be speedy..........but "dog with a bone" will try for you.

Let me know if I can help you further.

Nothing ventured nothing gained
Mandie

PS can always take the long approach.....could look at all the parishes for Carlisle..........as I said...........won't be speedy.
STILL LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!!!

Mandie

It was Suffolk.  I went on to Rootsweb and thought I'd volunteer for a region where I have ancestors.   However, I'm more interested in Lancashire (Dalton in Furness etc area).  Is that your area?  If so please send me a PM with details and I'll contact the appropriate people.

That is a very kind offer of yours, Mandie.   Smiley   But first, I should give you the scant information that we have :

There is an aunt, age 95, granddaughter of William George STORY, who has the most amazing memory of people and places of (about) 100 years ago, and she is most adamant that Wm Geo cam from Carlisle.  However, the relevant recorded facts which we know are -

William (George) arrived in South Australia, somehow, and met up with Caroline KITTO (from Cornwall in 1849), and a child was registered in 1852.  (Unfortunately SA BDM Certificates of the time, unlike eg the Colony of Victoria, recorded only the most basic details.)  But they then went to the Victorian Goldfields where 26 Oct 1854 they had another child, on whose registration Wm himself recorded his place of birth as Carlisle England, and his age as 38.  (The family returned to SA by 1857.)  On his 13 Aug 1891 Death Certificate, William George Story, a Farmer, is recorded as age 75.  And after Caroline died, Wm married in 1878 by which time fathers' names were also now recorded, which is where we get his father's name of John.

So we have but little to go on (except "unlikely" he was RC), the best we have been able to come up with, with access only to the Internet, is an IGI baptism 6 Jan 1822 Saint Mary Carlisle, parents John and Ann, and an IGI marriage of John and Ann HALLIBURTON 22 Oct 1816 also in Saint Mary, Carlisle.  (And from further research, gained only from IGI, these people may have been from Alston.)

So with this little to go on, we can hardly ask anyone to help us further.  Embarrassed  If you could, in time, you know it would be very much appreciated - but it is very much understood if this were not possible, in practice.   Undecided

(Hope you are over the "hangover".)    Huh

Thanks muchly, Jeenie.    Smiley  Smiley

Just last night (our time) we came across the following  :

http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11

William Story arrived 30 Dec 1845 aboard Pestongee Bomangee (1) departed 22 Sep 1845 Plymouth

If this William is our William, the Court Records (wherever they are) of his conviction and sentence to transportation as a Convict to Tasmania may well provide some of the information we are after.

But we don't know where that may be.    Huh
