...so many "trees" - what's a dog to do!

Dotterill families, Alverstoke
« on: Sunday 08 April 07 16:32 BST (UK) »

Does anyone have an interest in the name Dotterill?

John Dotterill, b.c.1776, was my hubby's 4xG-Grandfather. He married a Jane Gosden in 1797 in Alverstoke. Can't seem to find anything earlier on him.

The first child I can find for these two was William b.1806, and then John b.1809.

Any ideas?

Hi Stoney,

Young William died in 1807, buried St Thomas, Portsmouth.

The spelling variants abound, but there seem to be very few who make it to Portsmouth/Alverstoke.  An Ann Dotterell died in Portsea in 1786.  Catherington, Blendworth and Bedhampton might be areas for you to check.  Have you done a catalogue search at the Hampshire Record Office site:

Try all the variations you can think of - I got 9 hits for Dotterill but didn't try the others.  It may give you some pointers.

Hi,
I am interested in Dotterill family, as my cousin is the daughter of one and  I have been researching on her behalf.   I have to admit that I have become addicted to the Dotterills' now, particularly as it's such an unusual name.   At the moment I am trying to tie them all together going back to 1700's.   My interest is Alexander Sydney Hugh 1916, son of Sydney Herbert 1876, son of Walter 1841, son of John 1809 (and Harriet Hall Phillips), son of John 1764 (and Jane).   I can hardly get to sleep some nights because they are all going round in my head! Would be keen to share any info.

Moogriff - we must be on the same wavelength - my husband's Gx3 Grandparents were John Dotterill and Harriet Hall Phillips!

Their daughter, Jane (b.1839), married Charles Troman Cooke - their grandaughter is my mother-in-law.

As far as I have been able to determine, John and Harriet had 8 children, all in the Gosprt/Alverstoke areas (all christened there).

The earliest Dotterill connection I have is John marrying Jane GOSDEN, 26/07/1796 , Alverstoke.

Have found an old email regarding earlier Dotterill's - will PM you, shortly!
