« on: Thursday 29 May 08 13:51 UTC (UK) »

I have my Grandfathers Marriage Death and Burial record, he died when my mum was only about 18 months old and I would love to find out more about him.
According to the Marriage Cert
Abraham Lancer aged 22 ,Ladies Tailor, Father Wolf Lancer Master Tailor.
Married Susan Janover aged 21 24th June 1922 The Register Office Poplar
Death Cert died 3 July 1924 lived at 18 Wicker Street Cannon Road died at his work address 3 Raine Street E1
His Boss paid for the funeral and burial
According to the burial record he had been in England 17 years was born in Russia which makes him about 7 when he came here ?? if the facts are correct
Any ideas welcome .

I realise your grandfather was born about 1900, however you have probably seen an Abraham Lancer birth Oct-Nov-Dec 1912,  Mile End Old Town, London, Middlesex, mother's maiden mame Berkovitz.

Obviously a different person but possibly a relation. It might be useful to get his birth certificate.

Looked on the 1901 census..... no obvious Lancers but a Russian born Berkovitz family living at Whitechapel.

I realise that none of this actually gets you back to the Russian records, but sometimes I find that working sideways can throw up a few clues.

Where was he buried? (Seeing as the marriage was at the Register Office, I'm wondering if there's any clue to the religion of the family). And where did Susan's family come from originally?

Since it's likely no ship lists survive for this family, we have to look at other records:

For naturalisation, I found one possible relation - Harry Lancer, born in Russia, naturalised in 1919. (NA catalogue).

I also found a possible remarriage of his father/marriage of an older brother? - Woolf Lancer, 1912, in Mile End.  In fact, I'd argue that freebmd shows it likely that there was one family - possibly an extended family - who came to the UK around about 1905 (when first child born in London).

If all else fails, you might have to wait for the 1911 census. Sad

Hi again eeyores4me,
I suspect Lancer wasn't his roigingal russina name. I have a friend whose father was born in russia, who changed his name from Nikoli Vasilievich Dmitrevsky to Nicholas Leslie.
There are Russian Feration baptism records on IGI but nothing for the name given.
Probably need to look for immigration records, I would thnk.
Apparently a lot of Russian Jews left Russia at the end of the 1900s, and I believe that Jewish family records are perhaps easier to find (don't quote me on this!) - this may be a possible reason for him leaving.
If you do ever need anything translating later, please let me know - my son-in-law is Russian.
Good luck - happy hunting.

If you click on translate to english an english page comes up, then look at the column of choices nearest the left hand side and click on Advice(Councils) a beginner.

Thank you all very much for your help
I had not seen that birth and marriage was possibly blinkered in my search will certainly look into them this minute
He was buried in East Ham I have had promises from people at different times that they would go and see if there are any clues if he has a headstone ?? but nothing came of it I think I shal have to get my husband interested in this research business, as I dont like travelling too far by myself .
And thanks for the Russian translation idea
