Cole of Kings Heath
« on: Friday 04 April 08 19:27 BST (UK) »

I'm trying to sort out my Cole ancestors from Kings Heath.
Lots of relatives ~ Cole & Sarjant ~ lived there from around the turn of the last century, but I don't know when the Coles arrived or where they came from.
(The Sarjants lived in Aston)

I'll post the info I have.
Could anyone offer any suggestions as to where to go from here, please??

I have been looking at freebmd, the IGI, the census, any more ideas?

Thanks in anticipation!
*
Rose Cole was my gt grandmother, who was born around 1887.
Her daughter, Lucy Cole, was born Feb 21 1905 ~ I believe in Kings Heath ~ registered under Kings Norton

Rose Cole married George Alfred Sarjant ~ 1911 in Kings Heath.
George Alfred Sarjant was born about 1887 ~ family from Aston area of Birmingham.
Some Rootschatters found them on the 1901 census for me.
They settled in Kings Heath.

Rose & George's sons: George Alfred, Sidney John, Albert (may have died very young)
Rose & George's daughters included Florence, who died shortly after birth in 1922

Rose's brother's: Ernest John, Percy, Thomas (killed in WW1)
Rose's sisters: Em; Rye Florence.

George's brother was Sidney
George's sister was Lilian

Ernest John Cole married Lilian Sarjant ~ 1915 in Aston (brother & sister married sister & brother)

Rose's mother was Lucy
I understand that Rose's mother's sister was Polly
I was told that they might have been from Beoley

Sidney, George & Lilian Sarjant are on the 1901 census living in New Town Row, Aston / Birmingham with George and Emma Sarjant.

There are Coles in the Kings Norton district before this time, but I don't know if they are connected. They seem to be mainly in Northfield, but some in Selly Oak.

Kings Heath was just turning from countryside to Birmingham suburb.

Various pet names seem to have been used by the family.

I'd be grateful just for some ideas! Huh

Hi Tricia_2

Kings Norton Registration District doesn't cover Kings Heath I'm afraid.  At the time your grandmother was born it covered Balsall Heath, Beoley, Edgbaston, Harborne, Kings Norton, Northfield, and Smethwick according to http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/kings%20norton.html.

There is a Rose Cole born 1885 in Leamington on the 1891 census with parents Frederick and Lucy.  Other children are

1891 Census - Leamington [Spa]

Frederick Cole 40 day labourer
Lucy Cole 38
Mary Cole 20 laundress
Frederick unreadable age General Labourer
Ada Cole 13 scholar
Rose Cole 6 scholar
Emily Cole 4 scholar

They are all down as born Leamington but don't think that is correct.  Below is the 1881 entry for them:

1881 census - Worcester All Saints

Frederick Cole 36 sawyer born Powick, Worcestershire
Lucy Cole 28 weaver born All Saints Worcester
Mary Ann Cole 10 scholar born All Saints Worcester
Frederick Cole 8 scholar born All Saints Worcester
William Cole 5 scholar born All Saints Worcester
Ada Cole 2 born All Saints Worcester

1901 census - Northfield

Frederick Cole 48 Labourer Farm born Worcester
Lucy Cole 47 born Worcester
Ada Cole 20 born Worcester
Ernest Cole 12 born Leamington
George Cole 11 born Leamington
Percy Cole 6 born Leamington
Florry Cole 8 born Leamington

I'll see if I can track the others down for you.  Hope this helps, does suggest its your family.

If you'd like copies of the census entries, PM me an email address and I'll send you them.

1901 census - Coventry

Rose Cole - 16 yrs born Warwick - looks like a domestic servant.

1871 census - Worcester All Saints

Frederick Cole - 22 yrs labourer, born Powick Worcestershire
Lucy Cole - 18 yrs glovess, born All Saints Worcester
Mary Cole - 60 yrs widow Charwoman born [well it looks like] Wittington, Worcestershire [possibly a relation but doesn't look like Frederick's mother]

All down as Lodgers.

1861 Census - Powick, Worcestershire

John Cole 46 yrs widower agricultural labourer, born Powick
Frederick Cole son 12 yrs agricultural labourer, born Powick
Marianne Cole daughter 10 yrs scholar, born Powick
Sarah Cole sister [of John] 53yrs glovess born Newland, Worcestershire

1851 census - Powick, Worcestershire

John Cole 36 yrs head agricultural labourer born Powick
Matilda Cole 25 years born Herefordshire [can't recognise the place name]
Frederick Cole 2 yrs born Powick
Not Known female Cole 1 day born Powick
Susan Cole Mother widow 74 yrs nurse born Newlands

There's a marriage in Dec 1848 of a John Cole in Worcester Registration District, one of the possible wives is a Matilda Elton.  However as Matilda is down as from Herefordshire I think you need to trace back via certificates to confirm what Frederick's mother's name was.

Can't trace John in 1841 but on that census in Powick:

Sushan Cole 55 yrs
Sarah Cole 30 yrs
James Cole 25 yrs agricultural labourer

Probable siblings I would imagine.

You are welcome to copies of the census entries.

Food for thought, it may be worth you getting a copy of your Rose's daughter's birth certificate to see if its Rose's parents address from 1901 census.  Chances are it could be.  It may also be worth you getting her marriage certificate (if you don't already have it) to confirm her father is John.  Can't find a birth on FreeBMD yet but the names from the census entries seem to tie in and suggest that is your Rose and her family.

Good luck

Nicola

Hi Tricia_2

One last thing:

March qtr 1871 Worcester Registration District
Frederick Cole
Lucy Bishop

Would seem likely to be the marriage.

Nicola ~ thank you so much. I'll print it all off and study it. Certainly names and dates do look very, very promising!  Smiley

My grandmother thought that her mother, or grandmother, came from Beoley, but it looks as if they moved around quite a bit, so they could have lived there for a while.

Kings Heath was considered part of Kings Norton early in the century, so I think that still fits ok.

I have ordered Rose's marriage certificate ~ looking forward to seeing that.
I think I may have my grandmother's birth certificate ~ I'll check.

I'm going to have a good read ~ thank you so much for your generosity!

I am really very grateful and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!
And I hope that I'll be able to help you at some stage.  Smiley

With regard to the name 'Auntie Rye' on my other thread, I'm beginning to think that Florence was shortened to Florrie and then to 'Rie'. Using their Warwickshire / Worcestershire / South Birmingham accents, this could have become Rye, I think???
