Can someone please tell me whether Clayhidon existed in the 1500s. I can find parish records from 1813 onwards in Devon and some probate records for 1676-1765 in Dorset. I want to look at some births etc from 1570 onwards which I have been given as Clayhidon but I have't been able to confirm yet as I can't find anything.
Also some help regarding Churchstanton. When I look for it in the LDS Library Catalogues it just comes back that it can't be found. Can anyone tell me where I might find records for people who were supposedly born there - again in the late 1500s onwards.

Can someone please tell me whether Clayhidon existed in the 1500s.
I have looked on the National archives and have seen wills and documents for people in Clayhidon as far back as 1400. it is also mentioned in the Great Domesday book -year 1056... so it seems that it certainly did exist ..
not much help , I know .... maybe one of your family members may have had a will

Churchstanton parish registers start from 1662 and are held in Somerset Record Office.

The site above is the history of Clayhidon. Great site. The wills section has 1583 records mentioning Clayhidon.

Thankyou all so much for your replies. The person I am looking for was born in Clayhidon (supposedly) abt 1585 but from what is said below there doesn't seem to be much chance of finding her if she was. I also have a Charity or Charytye who died in 1606 and shows as wife of Thomas but I can't find either their marriage or her birth in either Yarcombe or Upottery so thought these may be in Clayhidon as well. I will check out that web site thanks and the probate records thanks Pam - who knows there may be something there. Deb - how do I get info from the national archives - are they online or do I need to get a researcher.

My family originate from Clayhidon and I have long since learned not to rely on Clayhidon records alone to find them as they are just as likely to be recorded in the parishes of Churchstanton and Hemyock .........dunno, I find it so confusing, or maybe it’s just my ancestors were as geographically challenged as I am !!!
These ancestors have been a nightmare.......the family themselves have been particularly difficult to unravel, I find the area confusing and moving the Churchstanton records to Somerset in 1997 wasn’t particularly helpful to me either. 
I’m just thankful that SKS has transcribed Churchstanton BMD from 1662 and made them available online

Thanks Seren. I had thought of Churchstanton but as I said could find nothing in the LDS catalog for it. Never thought Hemyock. It's going back so far. I am amazed at people who are back beyond the 1600s when their families are not famous and found in all sorts of books and things. Especially when, like me, they don't live in the country and can't go delving in cemeteries etc. I wonder if the graveyard in Clayhidon is on line anywhere. There were a few people in the website given in a previous post which were interesting but not mine. Also there was a thing with Clayhidon signposts and one of them said Clayhanger so I wonder how that fits in. Anyway good luck with whatever you are doing as well.

Well I was looking for some info on a couple of Summerhayes. I am looking for the death of a Rebecca in 1603 and a marriage of Charity to Thomas Summerhayes btw 1599 and 1603 incl. They are not in Yarcombe or Upottery which is where I thought they would be so I thought I would look in something close. Some of the family show up in Cleyhidon a bit later on so it seemed an obvious choice (or Churchstanton). With the signpost I wondered what/where Clayhanger was. Probably end up having to get a researcher which seems to be what happens when we get so far in our lines unless we can do it ourselves which being in NZ is a bit difficult. Thanks for your interest.
