Death of Christian Mackie
« on: Friday 04 April 08 21:29 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Can anyone help please?

I have been told that my 4 x Gt Grandmother Christian Mackie died in Edinburgh on 20-May-1877. I believe she was born circa 1799, and she was a widow since 1850 having been married to John Frederick Grothenwell

However I can't find her on SP despite using Soundex and ticking the box "Return all forenames that begin with these characters"

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

Thank you.

Hi again,

Here is the record from SP:

1877 Christina GROTTENWELL, f, 87, Newington district, Edinburgh, GROS: 685/05 0390

No maiden surname given on the index, although it may still be on the original record. Smiley Instead of relying on SP's "soundex/return all ..." features, I use wildcards, so for this one, I entered Christ* Grot*nwell and then just the year. I'm sure there's a thread on here discussing wildcards further but can't seem to place it at the moment!

Hi

I was just about to put up the same  Grin  Grin

and

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GEN-DE/2007-02/1172062155
When John died he was listed .......... his 1850 burial record he is named Grottenwell, but that is the
only recording of a different spelling

I agree too - On SP, the use of * wildcard helps enourmously

I found her same way as hume24 - by searching surname GRO*WELL, forname : Chris* in 1877 and then tried in full with the same spelling as her husband was registered as...

Cheers

Hi again

I just wanted to ask - are you aware John is listed twice in the 1841?

On FREECEN
http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
Once as GROLLENWELL with wife & children (St Clements, ED 2)
Once as CROFTERWELL age 55 - at work (West Parish, ED Cool

An alternative source  Wink listed him as
Once as GRALLENWELL with wife & children (St Clements, ED 2)
Once as GROTEISNELL age 55 - at work, West Parish, ED 8, address "Harbour"

Cheers

Wow,

Thanks for your help again Hume24, twice in one day, brilliant.

Ambly, I was aware of John's appearance twice in the 1841, but I appreciate you asking as I might not have Wink
Selfishly I wish he'd survived another year to the 1851 census, so I could know his country of origin. Never mind one day

Thanks to you both on the tip on wildcards Smiley

Away to get her cert!

Best wishes,

I have a 3 x great grandfather Thomas Mackie, and he appears on IGI as Thomas MACKAY, baptised 18 Jul 1802 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, parents Robert MACKAY and Margaret GIBSON.  We know, without doubt, from other evidence, that he and his parents are the right people.

On IGI (which is not exhaustive), he has other siblings recorded viz, Robert and Gibson, baptised 13 Aug 1797 and 5 Dec 1803.

We should be pleased to hear the detail on the certificate, please.

Cheers, Jeenie.    Smiley Smiley

Hi Jeenie,

Christian (or Christina on her death cert) married in Aberdeen, and had all her 3 children in Aberdeen. Having said that two of her daughters married in Edinburgh, so perhaps there is a link somewhere that I can't find. Unfortunately her parents are marked as unknown on the certificate. Please get back in touch if you find a link, and I'll do likewise.

Good luck,
