NSW deaths at sea
« on: Thursday 03 April 08 08:26 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know if there are lists of deaths at sea for NSW? I am looking for a death at sea in approx 1856-58 for a George Anderson who was travelling from Ireland with his brother Thomas Anderson. I thought I had found it in the Victorian Government lists, but it is the wrong George Anderson. Can anyone give me any advice or guidance? Maxene

Hi Maxene,  Smiley

You'd be much better to go to the Emigrants to Australia board, look at its child board Australia Resources, and click on New South Wales Resources.  There are several sites listed there that you could try, so I won't copy them here.  If you don't make progress that way, post on the Emigrants to Australia board and someone may have some ideas for you!

Hi Maxene

I have a Thomas ANDERSON arriving from Ireland (via Liverpool) on the "Matoaka" in Sydney on 22 Jan 1857.

I know the chances of my Thomas being your Thomas are pretty thin but I thought it may be worth an inquiry,

Do you think it could be the same Thomas ?

Regards

Hi, Cass - that was the Thomas whom I had originally targetted as being "mine", but until such time as I find a record of a George Anderson dying on that ship on the same voyage, then I can't be sure. I have read somewhere that all UK citizens who lived in Ireland had to do some military/naval service - I am wondering if they were "working" their way out to Australia - maybe there are Irish military records I can access. Thank you for your suggestion - if I or someone is able to establish that the Matoaka Thomas IS mine, I'll post you a message. Cheers, Maxene

Hi Maxene

The "Matoaka" Thomas is my G G  Grandfather .

His Aunt Honora Gahan paid a bond of Seven Pounds towards his passage on 10 April 1856. After he arrived in Sydney he married one of Honora's daughters Margaret on 10 Feb 1857.

If you find a connection I would be grateful if you would contact me

Thank you Cass - I had eliminated that Thomas but I am grasping at straws to find records. Hopefully it will happen! Thanks - I'll keep you posted if we end up being "rellies". Maxene
