Welcome to Rootschat Shelley.

You will need to get the marriage certificate of your grandparents.  That will show who her father was at least and if she was still living at home the address.  It is harder to find people after 1901 than before.  Depending on the address you can look at various directories, electoral rolls etc. but you will need to visit a library unless you can get someone on here to look things up for you.

I'm sure more experienced Rootschatters will give you some ideas.

Lizzie

ps.  Just looked at your profile and realise you've been a member of Roots for some time, but I'd not seen your name before, hence the welcome

Hi Shelley (and Lizzie),

There seems to be one only possible birth for May so if you think it's in the right area you might go for her birth cert immediately:

May Priscilla Cartwright
Jun 1902  Dudley 6c  44

Are you aware of any older siblings she may have had?  Smiley

Tati

My brain was out of gear, I started to look up the birth, then thought "Oh no point looking she's not on the 1901 census!"  I think it's called having a senior moment.

Not what I'd call a senior moment, Lizzie!!  Cheesy

No doubt it would be safer to order both certs, actually! Tongue

Fingers crossed for you from another breast cancer survivor, Shelley Cool

It would be great if we could identify May's parents right away on census - is there anyone you can ask whether she had older siblings (and their names)?  Smiley

That's perfect, Shelley!

Not many Lily Ruth Cartwrights births registered ca. 1900. The one that I see is - bingo - in the Dudley registration district:

Lily Ruth Cartwright
Sep quarter 1900  Dudley 6c 41

Sep 1900 meaning she must be on the 1901 census as well. What were May's father's name & occupation according to the marriage certificate?  Cheesy

For now I quite like this family:

1901
RG13/2734 145 10
Tipton, Staffordshire (Dudley registration district)
n°4 n°1 Court Waterloo Street
2 rooms occupied

John Cartwright, head, 35, Ironworks? Labourer
Eliza, wife, 34
Alice, dau, 7
Elizabeth, dau, 4
Gladys, dau, 2
Lilly, dau, 9 months

All born Tipton
