Albert John Ward (1878-1934)
|
I was wondering if anyone would be able to help.
Francis Harris was born about 1819 in Devonshire Father: Francis Harris Mother: Mary Paul
Unforntunately this all I know about this family. I am uncertain if Francis Harris (jnr), was sent to Australia as a convict or left England as free settler.
Francis Harris was already in Australia, by 1846 which was when he married in Goulburn NSW. So he would have come (or sent) to Australia sometime between 1830 - 1846.
I don;t this his parents came to Australia, and wouldn't know if there were other children.
Here in Australia he defiantly a mystery. There are Harris' in shipping records and convict records, but doesn't match this guy.
Maybe there's not enough info to go on, to search in Devon, though any possible help will be appreciated

Hi Deb
I don't have his marriage certificate, although - when he died in 1892, there were things written up about him, that he had a general store, ran a post office, and also was a licensee of Hotel - this was all between 1860 - 1880's.
Whatever his occupation was at the time of marriage is unknown. . . .

Hi Jack,
No help with the immigration - I haven't had any luck from UK end I am afraid. I suggest you try the Emigrants to Australia Board.
I wonder if this may be his family in 1841.

1861 Francis and Mary are still living - this appears to be one residence and seems to confirm a connection to John who now lists as born North Molton

Good Luck Jack,
I suspect the immigration was just prior to the 1841 census. Your death cert listing him as having been in the colony 51 years in 1892 seems to support this. Francis Harris is rather common - In fact there are two in North Molton in 1841, one even has a wife Mary (Too young to be your Francis's Parents) There are a couple of 20 year olds in Devon- one with family and the other not (a seaman not born in Devon) 1841 is a difficult search when a persons moves about, with no exact pob, but it does not appear your Francis is still in Devon by this time. Have you tried Vic Records in case he arrived via Vic? Just wondering if you have looked outside NSW for the record...............Kris
