Hartlepool burials
« on: Saturday 05 April 08 09:55 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I am trying to find the death of my great grandfather, John William Smith, who, according to my mother, died at a quite young age, in the pre WW1 years.

The only one who fits the bill is a John William Smith who died in Hartlepool, December quarter 1910, aged 47 ( my John was born 1863).

Is there anyone who can check Hartlepool cemetries for the John W. Smith above? He had a wife, Sarah Ann ( nee Bland) and offspring William, John, Amelia Alice, Lawrence, Christopher and Bushby. I would send for the certificate but as you will appreciate, I could spend a fortune on sending for John Smith documents before finding the right one and I am hoping that there will be an inscription on the headstone which gives some more information about his family so that I know I've got the right one.

Thank you so much,

Jen

Hi Jen

www.hartlepool.gov.uk

Links to the Cemeteries department on there.. There's an email address.. and a telephone number..

Its a huge ask for anyone to have a look around this churchyard at Stranton... it is huge..

But the folk who look after the cemeteries are very helpful..
They gave me the details over the phone with the burial plot number.. and from there I went down and found the grave with headstone..

When I got there I asked at the office and the lady from the desk took me straight to the grave.... Might be worth the phone call to get the burial plot no .. and then ask for someone to go check..

Yours

Thank you, that's really helpful. I shall phone them on Monday and see what they have to offer.

Cheers,

Hi Jen

Have you looked at the Tees Valley indexes?

http://www.teesvalley-indexes.co.uk/search.php

When you've found the one you want click on Hartlepool, before purchasing the certificate you can ask for verification by email, to ensure it's the correct one.

You have to apply by post for the actual certificate including a SAE.  I've used this service, mine arrived within seven days of them receiving cheque, quick turn round.

Oh how dim of me - I had forgotten that they would do a check that way. I have used the service before so very silly of me to forget. Thanks for the reminder.

The only one who fits the bill is a John William Smith who died in Hartlepool, December quarter 1910, aged 47 ( my John was born 1863).

This death was in the September quarter, not the December  Wink

Bear in mind that he died in Hartlepool Registration District, not necessarily in Hartlepool itself. The death could have taken place within any of these places: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/hartlepool.html

Thank you for pointing out my mistake - it could have caused some difficulties when I contact the Register Office.

Does anyone know what the Hartlepool area covers?

Jennifer,

Thank you - I have been on the computer for far too long today and suspect Iam no longer taking everything in.

But I have found some new Scottish ancestors!
