BELGIUM, Brussels - BMDs sources
« on: Saturday 05 April 08 11:53 BST (UK) »

hi Folks, I'm trying to establish the truth of family folklore and extend my FT back another generation or two if it is possible.

I have a root which comes from Brussels [France] - according to her 1841 census.  Believe me, i know how fortunate to have had an 1841 census give that extra snippet of detail!   Smiley

my Marie Celestinne de La Roche was, I believe, her cousin, Pierre Simon's mistress - he was already married in Brussels.  They had a dau Marie Celestinne - in London.  Pierre Simon returned to Brussels and Marie C sen. married a Richard Kenning who brought up the dau as his own.

There's been lots written, truth & fiction intertwined, about this family, but I'd really like to get to the truth of the matter if possible.

I know, today, Brussels is a huge area with 19 districts.  Can I, geographically, liken it to Greater London nowadays compared to 200 years ago when it was London City within the county of MDX?  Would Brussels, back then, have been a city within a country as opposed to being a large district.  Or, was Brussels almost like its own country back then?  Huh

I appreciate that knowing the difference may make the chances of tracking down BMD lines more likely

What i need to know, is, would it be that Celestinnes birth place related to the city of Brussels.  I don't speak French or Dutch so haven't been able to access the country's historical sites.

Pierre Simon de La Roche is reputed to have died 24 Dec. 1830 in Brussels as a result of injuries incurred at the Opera rising a few months earlier.

I'd like to track down his death lines and any others relating to him that i can find and then, hopefully, find a way of tracking Marie Celestine's.

Anyone know what the likelihood is of docs having survived there, from as far back as that, given that the country seems to have been like a political football between France and the Netherlands in the early 1800s?

Pierre Simon de La Roche
b.c.1866 Brussels; d. 24 Dec 1830 Brussels
Marie Celestine de La Roche
b.1761-67 [est. on 1841 census] Brussels d.1841 London

Thanks very much for your time  Smiley
