Brunel's Tamar Bridge
« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 16:05 GMT (UK) »

Surrey has an interesting site "Brunel's Tunnel Rotherhythe" which has been  involved in all sorts of aspects. It started with someone interested in the individuals who dug it. It occurred to me that a similar site for the Saltash Bridge might prove to be very interesting too. Perhaps someone could kick off with a scan of Heath Robinson's picture of the building of it.
I am going to repeat this in Devon.

The first problem you have is that the Tamar Bridge is the road bridge built around 1960.  The railway bridge over the Tamar built by Brunel in 1859 is the Royal Albert Bridge sometimes called the Saltash Bridge or Brunel's Bridge.

Hi Toby interesting idea.

I do have a copy of that Heath Robinson sketch - but I am not sure if I would be breaching copyright by putting it on here?  Advice please?

Hi Su,
I'm not sure. Heath Robinson died in 1944 so copyright may still be in force until 2014. Perhaps someone can be more certain.

Well done Little Nell. That picture akes me back  to a child of about 7 years old  setting off by train for a holiday in Cornwall with a small book published by the GWR and bought at the platform bookstall. Saltash Bridge has remained a favourite.
Thanks. Toby.

Somewhere I have some photos of the two bridges taken from Saltash Passage about 15-20 years ago. If they are of any use, I'll try find them and put them up.

Not very historic but ......... Undecided

Hi People,
I loved the Heath Robinson Sketch. I lived in Saltash for 10 years as a child & still have family there, but I've never seen that before. Absolutely brilliant. The Royal Albert Bridge is a masterpiece of engineering, although for many years the trains have had to cross it very slowly for safety. There is a story that the first diesel train into Saltash station was towed by a steam train as it had broken down! I don't know how true that is?
