ABRAHAM MILLS - Hampshire
« on: Saturday 05 April 08 13:19 BST (UK) »

Hi
I am tracing a convict back to Hampshire where he was beleived to be living at the time of his crime pre 1836. Town/village unknown to me.

All I know is Abraham Mills & a Sarah Mills were convicted of an offence that happened in Crookham 1836.
On their criminal records - Abraham was from Hampshire and Sarah was from Wiltshire.

Its confusing as these were twins born about 1817.  On Abraham's death record in 1902, it was stated his birthplace was Chatham (which I don't think is in Hampshire)

But he was in Hampshire when he was arrested in 1836.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Jack,

All I can tell you is that Chatham is in Kent.... definitely not Hampshire.

Chatham was a large garrison town.

Unfortunatley there were no census until 1841 .

Hi Patrish

Thank you for that info. . . and being no census until 1841, that rules out researching that family - through the census anyway. . . .

Thank you

Just another thought... Crookham Village is close to Aldershot which was and still is  as far as I am aware a garrison town, some military connections there perhaps Undecided

Hi Patrish

Crookham was the place they (Abraham and Sarah Mills) was charge in stealing - hence the reason they were shipped out to Australia as convicts.

They may have lived in Crookham, or nearby.  It was in the Hampshire advertiser, that they stole from someone in that particular twon/villiage. . . . so not too sure where they were staying at the time

I've checked the Hampshire baptisms and there does not appear to be a record of baptism for twins named Abraham and Sarah Mills.

There is a baptism if Abraham Mills in 1817, recorded as the son of a traveller from Great Kimber in Buckinghamshire.  No corresponding entry for Sarah.

Have you checked for any baptisms in Chatham in Kent?

Hi Nell
I am still going through the baptismal records of Chatham, I spent sometime going through, and was getting late here in Australia - so will continue later. . . .

The reason I thought they were twins - when both were caught and charged for steeling (at the sametime - double act), their convict records stated that they were the same age, and their description were alike. . . . .maybe they were cousins born the same year.

Interesting - when Abraham married had children there were twins in his family as well....... .. ..
