FRANCE: French research - INGRAM Family
« on: Sunday 30 March 08 11:03 BST (UK) »

Hi Martin  Smiley

As discussed on another thread, I'm posting here the details which I would like to have checked against records in either Morlaix or Brest, in France.  I know all these children were born in France (from England census details - the family moved back to England prior to 1851) but only have the birth registration for one, as marked below.  On the census, the other children are sometimes born Morlaix, sometimes Brest, sometimes just "France"  Huh

I'd be very grateful for any help you can offer  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy  Thanks!!

INGRAM family in France

Possible marriage: Joseph Henry INGRAM and Caroline MORRISH.  possibly Morlaix, possibly 1834-35.  Alot of "possiblies"!!

Births:
1)  Caroline Mathilda Maria, ca 1836
2)  Emily Lucy, Morlaix, 8 Jul 1837 (we have a copy of her birth registration from the Mairie in Morlaix)
3)  Matilda, ca 1839
4)  Caroline Josephine, ca 1842
5)  George, ca 1844
6)  Josephine, ca 1846

Joseph Henry INGRAM was a teacher of English somewhere in Morlaix, according to the birth reg. of his daughter Emily Lucy.

There is some repetition of given names in the children, but to the best of our  knowledge these names are correct.

Thanks Martin for your kind offer  Smiley  If there is anything I can do for you in return, please let me know.

Prue  Smiley

Hi Prue,

Leave this with me for a few days and I'll see what I can dig up for you.

I'll try to get to Morlaix town Hall tomorrow, and if necessary to Brest later in the week. In any event I will keep you posted.

Glad to try and help, after all so many people have helped me, it is good to have the chance to return the favour.

Best regards
Martin

Hi Prue,

Just to keep you up to date... The Town Hall Archives in Morlaix were closed today. (It is Monday and they need the day off to get over the weekend) Will try again tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Hi Prue,

Just an update again. (don't want you thinking I have forgotten)

The Town Hall asked for everything in writing so that they can go through the records. This is because I am not a French National and have no right to see their documents!

They have promised a rapid response though, and seemed very helpful. I'll report back as soon as possible and have asked for images if they have the entries you are looking for.

Sorry for the delay, a little patience required...

Regards

Sorry Martin  Undecided  You are having to go to an awful lot of trouble for me - I do very much appreciate it.
I wonder why they allowed my cousin (English) to view the records herself when she was there a few years ago?  I'm fairly certain she only went in there on a whim...

Anyway, thank you again and again and again...I hope after all your trouble that there is somethng there to find!

Hi Prue,

Ok, have now got a response from Morlaix, and I'm holding in my sweaty little paws two birth registrations.

The first is for Caroline Mathilda, born 08 September 1835...

The second you already have, though I note the spelling of Emily is in fact the French form, Emilie....

Given your original post I would guess that the others could be in Brest? I'll certainly give them a try, and see whether we can track them down. Is it possible that the marriage was in the UK before Joseph took up his post in Morlaix?

One down, some more to go.

I'll send you the images privately. Should you need translations, please let me know.

Best wishes

Hello Martin,
Wow!  Fantastic news!  Thank you so much - have sent you a PM with my email.

Yes, the others could be in Brest...it is definitely possible that Joseph and Caroline were married in England before they went to France, but we have not been able to find a marriage for them after years of searching.  Ah well, some things must remain a mystery, eh?  Maybe it will turn up one day!

Thanks so much for the effort you're going to - you must tell me if there is any expense involved in all this, I would not want you to be out of pocket at all.
