I am stuck behind a huge brickwall aka Benjamin RIPLEY I can't find him on the 1901 but I have found his wife Jane and children. I wonder if he could have joined up to fight in South Africa. Any help would be appreciated

Had a good look for Ben on the 1901 but I can't see him either. Do you know why the children had different surnames or have you just not added Ripley?

Many thanks for that confirmation. The "dodgy" birth certificates are part of the mystery 
I can't find a birth certficate for Thomas but the other 2 (actually 3 - there's another one to man named CLARK) only record WATTERSON. But then I have recently found: Marriage cert. No.110 1896, Aug 15th, The Register Office, York Benjamin Parkinson RIPLEY, 23, bach., Groom. res.? Green, York f.Benjamin Parkinson RIPLEY, Saddler, decd. Jane Ann WATTERSON, 21, spin., Domestic servant res.214 Bootham Square, York f.John Jacob WATTERSON, Blacksmith sign.B P RIPLEY & Jane A WATTERSON wits.John RIPLEY & Hannah Bielby RIPLEY reg.York
...and then the trail goes cold... that's why I thought about the Boer War
