« on: Saturday 05 April 08 19:31 BST (UK) »

Looking for a possible location of Hill Top Farm Codnor & Loscoe with a Samuel and Elizabeth Woolley as Farmers.
1881 census shows next dwelling as on (I think) Goose Lane .

Any help will be gratefully recieved

Thanks Ricky,
This looks like of those dead ends, the farm reduced from 200 acres to 8 over 40 years, so could well have been on Hilltop

Cheers

Dear Allan,
I recently had to find the home of one of my ancestors, in Ilkeston, and went to the library there.
The library has its own local history section and has many resources which might help you track down Hill Top Farm:
Maps (various decades and areas)
Local newspapers on microfilm
Rates books
Local books on the history of Ilkeston and surrounding areas - Heanor and Codnor should come under these
etc
I have always found the staff very helpful, not only when I visit personally, but also in responding to phone calls and letters.
They usually only charge for photcopying costs.
The telephone number is:
01159 301104
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Paulene Smiley
P.S. I'll be interested to know if you track it down.
Just thought, I'm sure Heanor has a local history society - should be on the web. There's always a possiblity that someone with local knowledge might have come across it.   Good luck!

HI again Ricky,

Your Link to the map got me thinking so I used google maps on the suggested area and what do I find but Goose Lane leading to what was HillTop Farm and now is Ormonde Field Golf and Country Club, wonder if the main building was the original farmhouse ?

Just noticed your post willow,

Thanks for that info, will definitely prove useful, I.ve still a lot of ancestors to chase down

Cheers

Hi again Allan,
Looks as if you're getting there!
Just remembered a wonderful site that will, I hope give you much pleasure in giving you a feel of what the area was like all those years ago:
www.picturethepast.org.uk
And, if you're lucky, you might find someone or some place to do with your own research - lets hope so.
Anyway, hope you enjoy looking through it.
Kind regards,
Paulene Smiley
P.S. There's even a Wooley's Farm, Alfreton Road, Codnor Grin

Thanks to you both for your help and encouragement on this one.

Will try  the Heanor Local History but looks like I'll have to leave the online searching and start visiting the area to get any further.

Cheers

Hi Allen
I don't know whether this will help you but my grandmother lived at Hill Top Farm in Ashover.

Thanks for that but thats another Hill top Farm up the road from Heanor

That's what I find fascinating about family research, how people from the same area just spread all over the world.

Cheers Woolley
