Hello Everyone,
I am wondering if someone could please help to locate this person in the 1901 census. It's not the easiest name to spell and pronounce, and to be honest she could be anywhere in Nottinghamshire or surrounding areas.
Here's what I know:
Born Billesdon, Leicestershire in 1846, she discharged herself from the Leicester Union workhouse on 11th May 1892, following the death of her daughter there on 9th April 1892.
She is never heard of again until 1914 when she died in Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Hence the reason for posting here.
In 1901 she would have been a widow, her husband died July 1887 in Leicester, she never remarried. Her death cert confirms name to be Sarah Jane De Quincey, a housekeeper (domestic).
Any help, clues or ideas of where to look next would be greatly appreciated, goodness knows I have tried so many places and different combinations.
Maybe someone with 'fresh eyes' and a stroke of luck might be able to locate her in the 1901 census.
Many thanks for looking and hoping someone can possibly help.

Hi Sue,
Yes that is her death entry, she died on 24th January 1914 in Lord Street, Sutton in Ashfield.
There is quiet a discrepency about her D.O.B on official documents! However she was baptised at Billesdon, Leicestershire on 28th June 1846, and believe it or not the official entry states that she was baptised Mary Jane! She was never called that and has never used that name. I've even looked for her in 1901 using that name but without success. She had a younger sister called Mary born 1850.
Thanks for your help, I am sure this mystery will continue for some time yet.

Hello.....
I know you have a few posts in trying to tie in Lord St and Sarah Jane De Quncey, I am sorry it is not a positive sighting but may give you a few more ideas.
I needed to look at the electoral register for Sutton in Ashfield for myself and had made a note of your query and had a look for Lord Street in Sutton in Ashfield.
I can’t say I really understand how the electoral register works and why some people you know are in a town but can’t be found, but probably something to do with things like the representation of the people act of 1918; which gave the vote to only three out of every five adult males, and no women, a six month residency qualification was introduced for men, and votes were given to women over thirty on the old occupancy basis……
The Nottingham Archives have a complete set of registers, but because I was at my local library it unfortunately has gaps in the years.
The 1914 register shows only five voters on Lord Street, house numbers; 4, 6,8,10 & 82.
In 1911 this is the entry for number 1 Lord Street; (dwelling house) George Edward Sankey.
I could be wrong but he could possibly be the same George Edward Sankey on the 1901 in Skegby, Nottinghamshire, which gives his place of birth as Shrewsbury, his wife is given as born in Alfreton, Derbyshire. Marriage at Skegby; George Edward Sankey & Emma Amelia Bacon – 14th January 1899
This is just a thought and I could be completely wrong but it appears from the FreeBMD that Emma Amelia Sankey died in 1909 aged 30, her youngest in 1901 was only a year old, if she went on to have other children maybe your Sarah Jane became housekeeper to take care of the children?
I didn’t see a burial for Sarah Jane at Sutton cemetery; do you know where she was buried? Who was the informant on her death certificate? Would that give any extra clues?
Regards
Sheila.

Hello Sheila,
Nice to hear from you again and many thanks for these ideas, your generous time and information. Every little helps I can assure you, and all the others reading these posts about Sarah Jane De Quincey and Lord Street.
So in 1911 at number 1 Lord Street was a George Edward Sankey. Fantastic news and another great lead to follow up on.
Sarah Jane a housekeeper looking after the children is a great idea worth pursuing. I like your thinking there, Sarah Jane's occupation on her death certificate was Housekeeper/domestic!
The informant on her death certificate was Thomas Farmer (present at time of death). Hence the reason for my other postings that you will have read about Thomas Farmer and Lord Street. I am just trying to piece together this very difficult jigsaw and trying to work out how these people were known to each other.
You are right about her not being buried in Sutton cemetery. A funeral/burial was booked at Sutton cemetery three days after she died, a grave space was allocated, but for some unknown reason this did not take place as planned. I have checked just about every churchyard, municipal cemetery and crematorium in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.
The mystery continues, any help and ideas always gratefully received.
