hi Casalguidi

I had seen them too , and Joseph could obviously be John Joseph , but in 1871 Emma, the feather brush maker, states that she is a widow .... I went back and forth with this ...as in 1871 John is 3 and Frederick 1month . With that said the brush maker occupation does make sense ...

ooo maybe we should look for John Joseph Smith in 1871 although we can only rely on his POB from the 1881.

Casalguidi ...can you see their marriage ..ie; Emeline/ Emma/emily Weller/meillear to John Joseph Smith ?   I find lots of marriages to different Emma's but none with the surname Weller or Meillear...

deb

added ..the time frame for a marriage is small ...in 1861 Emma Weller is with mum ... first child born to emeline and john joseph Smith is Ellen S Smith b c 1863 Stepney

do you think John Joseph Smith remarried ... I will look for Emeline's death . Emeline seems to stay consistant with being born circa 1833 in Kent , Plumstead.

Hi Deb,
Frances Maria Smith married Henry William Perrott - December 25 1889 at St Johns Church in the parish of St. John Walworth, London.    Henry was a Waterside Labourer, and they both resided at 42 Darwin Street.    Their marriage certificate states his father's name was Thomas Perrott (deceased) and her's as John Joseph Smith (deceased).
Frances died in 1929.    Henry died in 1950.    I have a copy of their marriage certificate and his death certificate, but cannot find a birth certificate for him.     My grandmother Elizabeth Maria (note how Maria seems to be passed down)
died in 1945 and I met old Henry at her funeral.    Grand old man.    I was very young then, and the young don't ask questions, or at least they didn't then.     What I do know from my father is that Henry William was very particular about his name and insisted that it was spelt right.    Taught his children the same.   Frances was unable to read or write and only put a X by her name.       Marihelen    I have sent off for Emeline's marriage certificate but I am told that it will take between  7 and 10 days to arrive as they are very busy at this time.

In the 1891 census his occupation is hawker and he has a daughter elizabeth and a son henry (henry died the following year).   In the 1901 has a daughter lizzie (elizabeth) also annie, nellie and john.      St. Georges - Blackfriars - Bermondsey are all in the Southwark area, and although they moved around a bit they always stayed in that area.    It was once put to me that he might have been born in somerset or some such, but they were all londoners.    Henry  always worked, if work was short on the docks he did other things, even a bit of painting and decorating.
Apparently, he also did a bit of bare knuckle boxing at one time, he must have been a very strong man in his youth.   Marihelen
