kitty emery murder
« on: Sunday 06 April 08 11:51 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can help me, I found an ancestor of mine on the Bedfordshire Goal Register who was tried along with her mother? for the murder of her infant child.
Her name was Kitty Emery and she murdered the child on the 1st of MARCH 1854 at Chalfont, the record gives no details of the case nor does it say what sentence she or her mother? Mary received.
I tried to get on the British Newspaper Online Site to see if the case was reported in a newspaper, but unfortunately I was not successful.
Please is there anyone on the forum who could take a look for me,or does anybody have ideas on how I can research this case.
I would be really grateful for any help at all.

Thank you so much for your interest, Best Wishes Bethan

I have seached The Times and the 19th. Century Newspapers and nothing comes up.

You may find something on The Black Sheep Index.

Good luck,

Hi

When Kitty & Mary were arrested she was sent to Bedford Gaol - I had a quick look at their website [google: Bedford Gaol] and she was 30 at the time.

Assizes Records will be at the National Archives [see their website]

Thank you so much Kathy and Jebber,
I have already seen the Bedford Goal Index, that is where I spotted these two and realised that they were in my tree, I will take a look at the Black Sheep Index and the National Archives, thank you both so much for your help, if I find anything I will let you know.

 Bethan,

I have found one reference in the local newspaper which I will send you if you give me your address via a PM.

You can engage Bedfordshire records office, by the hour, to look through their records, including the Bedfordshire Times.  I did this for William Bull hung in 1871.  Lots of info. The Bedfordshire times was a broadsheet paper and reported the trial verbatim - no need to go to Kew for the transcript Smiley

Thanks for the information Spark,
Waterfall has already kindly sent me a newspaper report of the trial from the Bedford Times, but your information will be useful for future reference.

Thanks again, best wishes Bethan
