Attached is an old family photo, and I would like some help deciphering the script on the back for translation.

I'm having a go at it just waiting for someone who actually knows to turn up.
(My granddad used to send me similar code when I was a kid - never managed to decipher it! Tongue)

It could say

Liebe ******, hier sende ich dir einen kleinen Gruß von uns allen zu Pfingsten

= Dear ****, I'm sending you a little greeting from us all for Whitsun

No idea what the name could be  Undecided

That's what we thought too.  We were a little unsure about the Liebe and the Pfingsten, but have no idea about the name.  It took us ages and we looked at it so long we thought we were going crazy.  That said, I'm still not convinced we got it right. 

ANYONE ELSE GOT ANY IDEAS WHAT THE NAME IS?

When I went to school we did just a bit of Old German writing, but when I left home my mother's letters were in that script and it took me ages to decipher them. Never thought it might come in handy again.

I still can't "see" Bertha but I'll take your word for it - it must be addressed to one person only as it says "hier schicke ich "Dir" although I still can't read the "hier schicke ich" part.

Just in time for "Pfingsten"....

There are a couple of things which are a bit unusual, Bertha normally has no "h" in
German and the letter at the end is rather untidy, but I still think it is an "a"
(Tristi - I think I remember a Berta in earlier searches I did for you). The other
one is "uns allen" allen has no capital letter. Could it be a name of a person, place
or house - Ens Allen?

I think it would be Bertha.  The Woerz family didn't always use traditional german spelling for names when they were in the German colony in Palestine.  I'm waiting on the family tree my mother is doing for me to figure out whether it is a Bertha and which one.

My friend and I had thought of Allan, but for some reason had discounted it.  I still think it's not Allan - but I can't see Bertha either - It just seems more likely.

Thanks for all your help.  In Australia we would say that you're legends.  It has taken my friend and I 2 days to even figure out what the letters are, so you've been such a great help.

Liebe Bertha, hier schicke ich dir einen kleinen Gruß von uns allen zu Pfingsten

= Dear Bertha, I'm sending you a little greeting from us all for Whitsun

I was sure that it's Bertha before I read the answers of the others.

(For me it's normal to write Bertha with an "h")

That's a very good link, thank you. I once copied some of the old German Scripts from a web site but I've misplaced them.

I teach English at a senior citizen centre here in Switzerland, and my students will also enjoy some of the links, especially the fairy tales!
