Girls' name 'Rye' or 'Roy'
« on: Sunday 06 April 08 17:40 BST (UK) »

My grandmother had an Auntie Rye, or Auntie Roy. I think that the alternative pronunciations may have been due to the Worcestershie / Birmingham accent.

Has anyone come across this name?
I understand that Rye can be short for the Irish name Riley, but I don't think that this is the case here.

I wondered if maybe she married a 'Roy'.

I believe her other name was Florence.

Any ideas, please?

She would have been born in the 1880 or '90s.

Florence could be Flo, Flora, Flossy, Florry. Any help?

An outside chance - but it fits the Brummie accent - Ray, short for Raymonda?

I wish she had used Flossie or something, but my grandmother and her sister always called her Rye or Roy and couldn't really say which of the two it was.

Could it  be Rae?   Not sure when this name came into use; perhaps too modern.  Undecided

I'll keep my mind open to any possibility. I've ordered a marriage certificate for my ggm,. which might give me more clues & lead me in the right direction.

I have an Auntie Doll ~ but it's just Dorothy!

Could the nickname be a shortened form of Maria/Mariah like Ria?

P.S. Theodora and Dorothy are different versions of the same name and Dolly is often a nickname for both.

My grandfather had an aunt Mariah (pronounced Ma-rye-a- never Ma-ria) and her nickname was Riah (pronounced Rye- a) which made me wonder if that could be the name.
