lunatic asylum registers
« on: Sunday 06 April 08 18:10 BST (UK) »

Hi, i wonder if anyone can help.  i spent a good few hours searching through asylum registers at TNA and have found a possible for my ancestor.  I have two queries:

1.  does anyone know what these column heading means?
the first one i think is recovered, but the next two, are they released and improved?  this is just my guess??

2.  on the second photo, in the middle is the name of an asylum but it is smudged, any ideas what it says?    ( next to the number 16!)

thanx
sara

Hi Sara

The answer to the first part of your question:

Quote
The admission register records whether, at discharge, patients had 'recovered', were 'relieved', had 'not improved' or had died.

Hi Sara,
It's certainly not easy to decipher - might be an abbreviation, or just bad spelling!
The following link might help - it's a list of asylums:
www.mdx.ac.uk/www/study/4_13_ta.htm#5
You might find it interesting anyway, Sara.
I'll look through the list, too, but I thought two pairs of eyes (or more) might be better than one.
Might be S something Huh
Good luck.
Kind regards,

Sarah,
Can you tell me if the link is coming up, please - we've just got a new internet server today and it won't come up on mine. I don't know if it's my server, or I've got the link wrong.
Thanks,

starts with an s and perhaps ends with one too, with maybe a th in the middle...

Hi everyone,
Thanks for letting me know Casalguidi - it's loading on mine now, so I think you're probably right in that it was just being temperamental.
Now wondering if it is an 'S' - sure the one above is Knowle (which fits with the list). Does this also begin with a 'K'? Still trying to determine which it is. Not at all easy!

Sarah,
Could you give us an idea of which area (not place) your ancestor came from, please?
That might help, though I know that someone might not necessarily be in an asylum near their home. Poor John Clare went to various places!

hi

that link is working, thanks for that - plenty of reading....

my ancestor was from middlesex.

the reason i am looking is my ancestor's grandaughter (in Zimbabwe) said she remembers her father visiting his mother ( said ancestor) in a lunatic asylum.  I have found the right name ( Ada Seymour) in 3 different registers, this one, one that says cornwall asylum and another that says plymouth.

if this one does say herts - that is not far from middlesex i think.  i am not certain it is my ancestor but will try to discover the records.  it could be the same person in all 3 registers as the dates don't overlap!!  then again could be different people.

thanks for all the help everyone, i am excitined about discovering more Grin...............

Yes, that's much clearer and I agree with the other Rootschatters - Herts.

I also agree Herts.

Also above Croydon it's shows a couple of names -Colney - When travelling down the A1(M) towards the M25 last night I spotted the sign post for the A414  which said London Colney.
