Hi, Much to our amazement we have discovered an unknown relative (Arthur Lane) who moved from West Cranmore in Somerset to Wokingham Berkshire in the late 1800's. He died in that area in 1914 leaving a lot of surviving children. I am trying to work forward on these to see if I have any living relatives in that area. His children are Beatrice, William, Walter, Daisy, Harry, Frank, Ada, Fredrick, Kate and Mabel. Has anybody any clues that they can offer me on this one. Several elderly relatives on my branch are very keen to discover unknown cousins.

That looks to be only a portion of your info.
Wherever possible, you should be tracing his kids at least till 1901, then you are much more likely to get a 'bite' on your request.

You don't even give an AGE for any of 'em. As for marriages, you CAN sometimes infer kids from MMN...

You are probably already aware that Walter married either Lillie Paulina Dobson or Henrietta Jemima Gadd.
There is no evidence from children born in Wokingham after 1910 which of these was his wife but if it was Henrietta there is a lot of history around the Gadd family in Wokingham.
There was a James Lane living at 24 Goodchild Road Wokingham in the 1920s.
Do you have any more background information about the Lanes in Wokingham like how they were employed? I have access to quite a lot material about the town.

Hi to both of you, Arthur Lane was a stone mason but occasionally described as monumental mason. Augusta Ann (nee West, mothers name Hedges) his wife was described as a dressmaker and was the daughter of publicans in Abingdon (in the Market Place). They married in Abingdon in 1876 but in 1881 on-wards lived in Wokingham. Mays Cottages , London Rd then 89 London Rd when his trade was described as Monumental Mason. By 1901 he was in Oxford Rd but described as a Stone Mason again. He is recorded as having died in 1914 in Wallingford (is that the local recording district or a possible address?). Walter was a carpenter (1901). I had not been able to pin his wifes name, so the two options you have given are interesting. If it helps, Walter was born in 1881. Harry James a telegraph messenger (1901). It does look as if Cyril could be his son, which gives me an excellent step forward. Thanks both of you for your help, I am fairly new at this and the post in the chat room was a stab in the dark. I am unsure if people would prefer all the information to start with or if the bare bones hence my only giving brief details. Adrian.

In the 1860s it was fairly unusual for a pub to be licensed in the name of a woman unless she was the widow or daughter of a previous landlord. For this reason you need to look for the names of close relatives when searching for the pub that they ran.
Looking in the census and local directories are the best place to find who ran the various pubs.

Hi,
I didn't know about the fact that it would have been more likely a man as the publican, but did assume that it in this instance it had been taken over by the wife upon her husbands death.
That is interesting about the remarriage of Augusta and just goes to show that you have to be careful and get the whole picture. Would it have been the norm for children of a previous marriage to take on the new father's name without formal adoption (if such a thing took place then) or was it just convenience? I have both examples within my current relatives so expect things don't change much.
