Can any one help me with information about Edwin STEDDS, originally from Somerset, who settled in the South Island?
He apparently went in to partnership with a distant relative, Artemis CANDY.
It seems possible that he is mentioned in the Cyclopaedia of New Zealand, or perhaps in the Biographical Card Index in the Canterbury Museum.
Any information about his family background would be very welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Do you have nothing further? eg do you want burial? There is an Edwin Mark Steeds probate 1937 http://www.stead-steedons.co.uk/probate/nz/z1937b08.htm
What sort of age are we looking at?
In 1893 electoral roll Surname STEEDS Given Name Edwin Number 10599 Electorate Christchurch Voting Qualification Residential Residential Address Cashel St east Occupation Merchant

Hello Althea
Thanks for the prompt about being a little more specific; I simply forgot to give some approximate dates...
Unfortunately I don't have a lot more to go on, although I suspect that the Edwin STEEDS I am researching was a little bit older than the one you have found.
Certainly Artemis CANDY was born in 1834 and died in 1925 in Auckland. There is a possible Edwin STEEDS born in Evercreech, Somerset in 1834. He is still in the UK in 1861 (unmarried) but seems to have disappeared by 1871, so he is a potential candidate. However, it seems unlikely that he would have been 103 when he died, so perhaps Edwin Mark STEEDS is his son.
If this is the right link, the Edwin STEEDS I have found was a son of William and Ann STEEDS, and William had a brother named Mark, so perhaps that is where the middle name came from.
The 1893 entry in the Electoral Role could well be the right person.
Many thanks for helping me out with this; maybe someone else will have marriage, death or burial records that might identify the right Edwin in or near Christchurch.
Thanks a lot and kind regards
Philip Candy

Hi Althea
This is fantastic. It is definitely the right person, and in fact it looks as if his wife, may have been Mary Gay STEEDS.
Into the bargain, I was able to find his cousin Thomas Baynton STEEDS, who I had previously 'lost' out of the English records.
Thanks so much for your help with this inquiry.
Kind regards

What a remarkable labour of love.
Thank you so much for this wonderfully detailed information. I started this inquiry with no information about who Edwin was, and I now know more about him than anyone else in his branch of the Steeds family!
The quality of the information is stunning; thanks so much for the time and trouble spent on this research for me.
Kind regards
Philip Candy
