Hastings help
« on: Sunday 06 April 08 23:35 BST (UK) »

Hi, This is my first time on rootschat so sorry if i have put my message in the wrong place. please let me know.
I am trying to find the parents of Elizabeth mabel Richardson (maiden name Breeds) and Frederick Edward Richardson. Elizabeth and Frederick were married sometime in the early 1900s.They lived at Hill street in Hastings.
Hope somebody may be able to point me in the right direction.
Many thanks.

Welcome to Rootschat!

How sure are you of the dates?
There is a Elizabeth Mabel Breeds born in Hastings in Sep 1908 which would push her marriage to at least the 1920s. You could get her birth certificate.

Hi

Here is her birth reference which will enable you to get a copy of her birth cert

Elizabeth Mabel Breeds September quarter 1908 Hastings Volume 2B Page 15

You can order online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
and the cost is £7

That will tell you her parents names and her mothers maiden name

Hi

There are quite a few Frederick Edward Richardson's - was he born in Sussex?

It may be better to get a copy of their marriage certificate to establish how old he was at that time

I've checked freebmd but as their marriage would have been in the late 1920's or possibly early 1930's, transcriptions for that period are thin on the ground

You will need to search the full GRO index  which is available at your nearest main library.  It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

Can I suggest you ask around any remaining family for details of when their first child was born.  That will help narrow down their marriage year

Wow!!!
I can not believe how quick and helpful people are. I am not sure if I need to reply individual  so thank you to rjknott and caroleW for their help.Sorry I miscalculated the date of the marriage,I have so many scraps of paper ,I need to sit  and write things down.I think this is my Elizabeth as her children(4?)  may have been born in mid to late 20s/ early 30s.Also Fredarick may have come from peckham.

Hi

They were married before 1928 - here's at least one of their children

Births Mar 1928

Richardson  Betty M  mothers maiden name = Breeds  Hastings  Vol 2b Page 31

And here's their marriage - they didn't marry in Sussex which is why I couldn't find it earlier

Marriages Sep quarter 1927

Hello again
You are so fast,Thank you. I have just been questioning my relatives again and I was going to say Fredarick  may have come from reading not peckham as I said yesterday.
Sorry for the confusion but there are lots of fragmented pieces in this family puzzle.I know one of their children was adopted and I have now got the papers she is still alive but is very happy with me searching the family roots. There may also be another half brother to the children of Elizabeth and Fredarick but that may be to recent to talk about. I am going to get Elizabeths birth certificate as advised. Thanks for your help.

Hi

I've just logged in to the GRO website and made a "pretend application"

On the very first page where it asks for certificate type (ie) birth in your case -  did you then scroll further down to the heading "For all events" where it asks if the GRO reference is known and asks you for the year

If not - that may be why it is asking for an actual date

Oh dear this is addictive.

Hi

It's not just addictive - it's expensive as well with copy certs at £7 a time.  It's a wonderful hobby and I'm sure you will have a lot of fun tracing your family back through the various censuses

To trace Frederick - you really need the 1927 marriage cert as there are quite a few possible entries on the birth index so we need to pin down his age when he married

100% - I would find it highly unlikely that 2 Frederick E Richardson's married 2 Elizabeth M Breeds

Hi
I have ordered the marriage certificate for Frederick and Elizabeth so it can hopefully put another piece in this family puzzle.I have also found a photograph of Hill street in Hastings,it is a fairly recent photo but at least it gives me an idea of where they lived.Thank you for spending your time to help me.

Hi

It's a pleasure.  When you get the birth cert for Elizabeth - post a message with the info from it and we can then go backwards for you and find her parents etc

Same with the marriage cert.  If Frederick came from Peckham - perhaps that's why they married there.

Once we know how old he was when they married and his fathers name, we may (hopefully) be able to find his birth reg
