Bother, I was hoping this trail would lead us to the Winn origins.
But 1861 is not conclusive.
There isnt a Henry giving place of birth as Eckington, Heckington, Hackington or the like.
there is this one, father's occupation looks hopeful:

Ellen was Ellen FOWLER, married Henry WINN at Brighton Dec qtr 1865. His info on FreeBMD is not clear but doing a lookup on the place and folio have come to that result. Plus also the IGI has an Ellen FOWLER baptised at Shermanbury 5 Jun 1843, which ties in age wise in 1871, 1881 and 1891. A bit out on 1901. Her parents were Henry and Ann.
Just found the marriage on the IGI, Henry WINN and Ellen FOWLER, 22 Oct 1865, Saint Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex. No source info so not sure if it is extracted or submitted.
No Catherine FOWLER to Henry and Ann, so she was not Ellen's sister, but probably sister in law.
The only marriage I can see with a John WINN and Catherine is Mar qtr 1868, Liverpool, 8b 13, John WINN and Catherine WHATELEY. There is a Catherine Eliza WHATLEY birth Dec qtr 1843, Newent, 11 359, which could be her. Newent district spans the boundaries of the counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Although not sure if these are the same Catherine/Katherine as John WINN's wife, as Catherine Eliza WHATLEY married William MASEFIELD, 3 Oct 1877 at Great Malvern, Worcester according to IGI.

Hi.
Many thanks for your recent posts Ian, this branch of my family is starting to open up really nicely now.
I have looked at catherine WHATELEY for a while now because of her marriage to a john WINN and she is shown as being involved with catering, all very slight I know, now however because of Glens post on monday it seems she was born in Bristol, our catherine that is ,so its back to the drawing board with that one.
I shall now make it a priority to get one of the childrens birth certs and clear this puzzle up.
I'm very pleased to at last have johns family and birth place, I can hopefully take the line back a generation or two from there.
