1820 Settler Migration to South Africa
« on: Monday 07 April 08 01:47 BST (UK) »

Hi there,

My ancestor, Abraham Wild, born Oldham about 1989/1790 and his wife Ann Thornton, emigrated to South Africa in 1820.  They sailed on the "John" from Liverpool in January 1820.  I wondered whether it would be possible to obtain records in relation to this migration, possibly showing dates of birth/christening and names of parents or an address.

According to shipping records there were 5 children - see 1820settlers.com. and below.
In 1838 Abraham was a storekeeper in grahamstown.
There are a number of Wild christenings on Familysearch.org
Here is a thread of interest:

I see from your other postings that you do have much of the info I have posted. Please, as a newbie, post all the information you know about the family initially as time is precious to all of us. It also helps when I go through the records again in a few months time.  But I am always willing to help wherever I can.

Hi Ruth,

Yes, sorry - I have much info on the South African side, but unfortunately the records with regard to the "John" are pretty sketchy and I was just hoping that there would be something on the U.K. side with regard to this migration - it is Abraham's parents I am after.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi again,
Your best route is the UK but do you have Abrahams death notice? This could list his parents.

Hi Ruth,

Coincidentally, I have just had an email in from a South Africa researcher suggesting the same thing - as well as the archive information, so this is what I am going to try.  It is in the Cape Town archives and I will have to get hold of a researcher to get it for me.

In the meantime I have gone into the Shaw Parish records on-line and extracted every Wild birth from 1755 to 1820 in an endeavour to make some sense of all the various families - these records are good in that they list the place of abode of the parents, so am able to group families - would you like a copy for the site when I have it ready?

Thanks again for your help.
