Job Curtis

I am hoping someone will be able to help me please I have been trying to find a Job Curtis in the 1841, 1851, 1861 census but I am having no luck. In the 1871 census Job is married and his place of birth is stated as Stapleton Mangotsfield but I cannot find him any where in Stapleton or Mangotsfield in the those census. When he was married his father was James but I caanot find him either so I am wondering whether they had their names down at all. Thank you if any one can help Joyce Baber

Hi Joyce
Had a look at the image for 1871 and it gives Job's place of birth as Wiltshire. I think you'll find him there on earlier census records.

Thank you for looking for me I did try to look on the 1841 census there was no Job there with a James and I looked on the 1851 census and I found a Job with his Grandparents and nothing on 1861 so I still dont know who his mother is. Thank you

In 1861 Job Curtis aged 11 is listed as Grandson of James and Ann Gough - aged 36 and 34 respectively.
(Class: HO107; Piece: 1834; Folio: 185; Page: 3)
Something odd there wouldn't you think?

This could be his birth,
Job CURTIS Dec Q 1839 Chippenham v.8 p.269
and possibly his marriage,
Job CURTIS Sep Q 1861 Clifton v.6a p.217
Caroline KING with same details.
Job CURTIS

Just in case nobody has spotted this......
On the 1881 census Job and his wife, Caroline, have a 21 year old son called Aaron Curtis, who does not appear with them in 1871.
In 1871 he is with (guess who  ).....James and Ann Gough and described as Grand Son. (Cricklade RG10/1884 Folio 94 Page 10).

Possibility is that Job Curtis is James Gough's natural son with Sarah, born before they married. In 1841 they decide to use James' surname for the children, but by 1851, when James is now with Ann, Job is using his mother's surname.

Hello Everyone Thank you for all your replies I am really surprised about Jobs's birth it gets strange as it goes along so I will take it that James Gough is really Jobs son and his mother is Sarah. Job is the one who married Caroline king Thank you I really apprecitated all the messages I am pleased I came to this Roots Chat to find out Jobs family. Joyce

I have come into this link late but I have some extra information of which you may or may not be aware. I have the 2 March 1840 marriage certificate of James Gough and Sarah Curtis who were resident at Seagry, Chippenham district. James' father is recorded as Charles Gough and Sarah's father (who is listed as a widow) is Benjamin Stockholm. I believe the latter is an unusual surname.
I also have Job Curtis' birth certificate showing birth on 12 October 1839 to Sarah Curtis in Sutton Benger. Again Sarah lists her maiden name as Stockholm. The copying is poor but it looks like the person who registers the birth is Joanna Gough.
It would be interesting to find the death certificate of Sarah's first husband to see if there is the possibility that he could have been the father of Job. He could well be the father of Fredrick, listed as son of Sarah & James, along with Job, in the 1841 census.
By the way, my interest is in the Curtis line which goes through Job Curtis' son Henry Curtis and then onto his son Arthur Curtis in Bristol.

Slightly nervous of giving out my email address but happy to share information for time being. I got something wrong in my last posting. Sarah Curtis' maiden name was not Stockholm but rather Stockham. I found this out on Sarah's marriage certificate to James Gough. Stockham looks to be the correct name. On the marriage certificate (which took place on 2 March 1840 in Seagry), Sarah's father is Benjamin Stockham. On the North Wiltshire 1841 census listings, there is a 75 year old Benjamin Stockham resident in Seagry. James' father is Charles Gough. On the same 1841 listings there is a Charles Gough (Aged 50) living in Sutton (place of Job's birth) who is married to Johanna Gough (Aged 55). As I said earlier, the name Joanna Gough is down as the informant on Job's birth certificate. So looks like our "Curtis" line is embedded in Wiltshire and is not actually linked by blood to the surname "Curtis". Currently I am awaiting the death certificate of Sarah Gough who died in 1843 to check if this is our Sarah. Will get back to you on this.
I would be interested if you have any photos of the Curtis clan as the family don't have much. My father was born late in his mother's life and didn't have any family relationships with the Curtis' extended family. It would be great to hear more about them as people. We are all short and slim which in part comes from my Dad's side of the family.

Thank you for replying I know what you mean about giving out your email we well connect this way instead . Now I am interested to know how many James Goughs are there in the family there is James and Ann Gough and James and Sarah . I did have al look in the 1851 census for Wiltshire and I found a Charles and Juana Gough is that the same family you found in the 1841 census as there is a brother in law with them a George Barrington. So Benjamin Stockham is Sarah's father so have you any information when she married James Curtis at all please Thank yoy Joyce
