Ancestry have transcribed it as 'Fordon' , which is what it looks like to me.  However there doesn't seem to be such a place in Norfolk, the closest are  Flordon, and Fordham.

As Phoebe is living in Middlesex, and the enumerator probably unfamiliar with the place name, it may have looked/sounded like Fordon as written or spoken.

Agree Flordon or Fordham seem most likely.

Many thanks to both of you, for your prompt replies.  It will give me something to work on ..... as the census entry for 1861 is even more illegible!!

I know she married in 1834 at Heigham St Bartholmew, Norwich but no trace of a baptism.

Back to the drawing board.

I have attached the 1861 entry , but it is not a great deal of help!(top line)

Regards and thanks once again

Hi,
I see on Free Reg that there are some GERMANYs baptised in Foulden 1809 and 1810, both named Edmund with parents Moody Steel and Mary GERMANY - So, could it be Foulden on the census? No Pheobe on Free Reg at Foulden though but there is one baptised and born 1826  Sprowston with parents Wm & Hannah GERMANY - too young for your Phoebe but could be connected.

Hi

Thanks for your messages - I had noticed the other Phoebe and had a look at the line.

My Phoebe married in 1834 .... but there are baptisms for 2 of their children - supposedly in 1821 and 1826 at Norwich St Michael Coslany.  I think I'll have to get copies of the entries as these appear on IGI ("exctracted record."... etc). Confused? I certainly am.

Many thanks once again and I will have a look at the Freereg entries.

Regards

Hi

Have checked the Freereg site and did some variations on the surname and came up with.....

Phobe  Jermin - base born daughter of Mary Jermin, born 1799 at Foulden, Norfolk.

Am also following up Moody and family. There is Jarmany/Jermny website which I have also checked out (this has given me a lot of the surname variations that I have now tried out.)

Have also ordered copies of the daughters baptism entries.

Many thanks once again for your suggestion.

Regards

The first one looks like "Norfolk Town" to me (which I know does not make a lot of sense)

Hi

I have got the baptisms of the two daughters 1822/1825 - confirming the parents are James & Phoebe (father - cordwainer). One daughter is baptised Caroline Sharman Nobbs.  Still doesn't explain why there is no parents  marriage until 1834 - unless they tied the knot after having the children!! - still on the scent of Phoebe - may have to order a few more entries.

Thanks once again to all who have replied.

Is it me or does the first letter of the word (1861) look exactly like the N in Norfolk?

I thought it was Town in the first entry too.

Hi everyone

I have had a look again at the 1851 entry and have posted a bit more of it - for comparison of handwriting. But, I do not know if it is of any help! I am no expert on handwriting - apart from  having bad handwriting when I was at school.

Many thanks for all your thoughts!

Regards

Hi,

James and Phoebe were married quite late in their lives, is it possible that James was married to another Phoebe and this being his second marriage? Could it have been that Phoebe Germany was also married before to James Knobbs?

I dont know if this is much help but it looks as if two nephews in her household in 1851 census (Sweatman's), William Swetman looks as if he was bapt. 31 JAN 1813 Saint Michael Coslany.  This may help you find a link, if they are related to Phoebe through a sister??,  someone appears to have him as William Sweatman on genesreunited.  Although they may be related to the Knobbs.

regards

Hi GJB,

That thought has occured to me - regarding the nephews, assuming they were hers and not her husbands. I have found them transcribed recorded in various spellings!

Regarding the marriage - I have not been able to find anything (yet) regarding a first marriage for James Nobbs or Phoebe.  - there are a lot of James's out there, born about the right time.  The 1841 census is not a great deal of help either( I note that William Swetman is there).  I will following up all avenues suggested - unless I manage to get to the records office there. The coverage on the IGI is not great for that county.

Regards - and thanks - off to sort out William S!
