Moore/Pillefant/Shoebridge
« on: Monday 07 April 08 12:00 BST (UK) »

Hello!

Does anyone know of an Anne Maria Pillefant or Mary Ann Shoebridge b. abt.1828??  My Gt. Grandfather (Thomas Moore)'s brother was William Moore b. St Luke 1832 and he married 'Anne' (neccessarily Pillefant or Shoebridge according to BMD) in 4th Qtr 1854 and had 6 children - Jane, Emily, William, Samuel, Mary Anne & Sarah Anne.

I am asking on here because the surname 'Pillefant' is unknown on Genes and LDS and Shoebridge isn't much better!  I am hoping to find out which one William married, without being obliged to buy his Marriage Cert. - I have others much higher on my priorities list!!

My gut feeling (almost never to be relied on!!) says it was Pillefant - I like the name too!!

Hoping someone may know of some Pillefants!!!!

Thanks in advance,

Hazel

Hi Hazel,

Have you looked for William and wife on 1881 census?

Hello, Hazel,

Have you tried to find the family of William Moore with either an Ann Marie or Mary Ann with the children on any census ?  Or tired to find the birth entries for the children which would give you an idea of where they were living as that would help to know the census district.

I had a look to see what I could find on the Pillefant name & found that it seemed prevalent in Devon, I found the following that might be useful, I cannot say whether it is your Pillifant/Pillefant family but there is a co-incidence here that is interesting.

1851 census
HO107/1571  folio 496  page 8
Bridge Rd   Lambeth

Ann PILLIFANT  age 28  House servant  b  Hatherleigh, Devon
it seems to be a store of some kind with live in assistants.

1851 census
HO107/1520  folio 45  page 11
Noble St.  St Luke  City Rd.

Mathew PILLIVANT  head  age 25  Fancy Box maker  b  Hatherleigh  Hampshire
Elizabeth  wife  age 23  b  Cove, Hampshire
Susanna  dau  age 11mths  b  Islington

Altho' Mathew's place of birth is Hatherleigh  HANTS. Hatherleigh is really in Devon.

1841 census
HO107/  257  bk 6   Folio 23  page 40
Hatherleigh  Devon

Mathew PILLIFANT  age 50  Ag Lab   born in county Y
Susanna   age 50    b   ditto
John  age 10   b   ditto
Ann  age 20  b  ditto

1841 census
HO107/256  bk 18  folio 7 page 10
Broadwood Kelly

Mathew PILLIFANT  age 16  M S  ag lab  born in county Y

Is it a co-incidence that Mathew is living in St Lukes & may be the brother of Ann.

Haven't tried any Shoebridge connection yet, off to the dentist now so will be out of action for a while.

Have just found William Moore, wife Anne, with children in the 1871 census  RG10/466  folio 26  page 8
3, Broad Walk  St Lukes, Whitecross St Clerkenwell
Anne's POB is shown as St Lukes same as William & children.

Another co-incidence  Huh   Huh    William's occupation is Fancy Box maker,  same as Mathew Pillivant.

Hi - thank you both for your replies.
I do have William and Anne on the 1871 Census after which she died, I think.  (Deaths Mar 1872 MOORE Anne 36 Marylebone 1a 332)  In 1881 Mary Anne and Sarah Anne are  scholars at “Holborn Union Industrial Schools” Mitcham Surrey and William is possibly staying with his granddaughter, Emily Bedding

I have trawled the various Censuses for Pillefant (and all its variants) but haven't been able to find a 'convincing' family  with Anne as daughter and am a bit a dead end there!

I did hope someone else might have been researching Pillefant!!

Will post any further findings!

Cheers!
